Two companies are proposing exchanges for betting on movie box office receipts. It's similar to how investors now trade on futures for corn and other commodities.

Trend Exchange from Veriana Ventures would require higher minimum investments than the Cantor Exchange from Cantor Fitzgerald.

In Cantor's case, a so-called hedger -- such as an investor in the movie or just a fan -- would sell futures contracts to a speculator valued at $1 for every $1 million in expected U.S. and Canadian ticket sales during the first month.

So if the market believes the next "Harry Potter" movie would make $175 million, a futures contract would initially go for $175. That opening price would be determined in an auction about six months before a movie's release.

That contract would trade higher and lower as expectations rise and fall. If box office estimates rise to $200 million because of good reviews closer to the movie's opening, holders of existing contracts could resell them for $200, making $25 in profit. Or a hedger could sell a new contract for $200 to a speculator.

If "Harry Potter" ends up making $250 million when the month is up, the speculator would gain $50 for every contract bought at $200. That $50 would be paid by the hedger.

Movie review: 'Clash of the Titans' - Los Angeles Times

It's doubtful that records are kept about this sort of thing, but consider the possibility that "Clash of the Titans" is the first film to actually be made worse by being in 3-D.

Not that this remake of the creaky 1981 original, best remembered for a slumming Laurence Olivier and Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation monsters, was ever going to be something to write home about. At least not for anyone older than 10.

For one thing, as directed by action junkie Louis Leterrier ("Transporter 2," "Unleashed") and written by Travis Beacham and Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi, this "Clash" has dialogue so plodding that a halfway decent line like "you have insulted powers beyond your comprehension" sounds like something out of Noel Coward.

Obviously, no one comes to a movie like this for repartee, but even the action scenes, with ancient Greek hero Perseus ("Avatar's" Sam Worthington) facing off against an entire menagerie of mythical monsters, come off as lethargic and clunky.

Possibly because this film was converted to 3-D late in the game, the third dimension, especially in those action scenes, is more of a distraction than an enhancement. While some creatures, especially Pegasus the flying horse, flourish, 3-D clutters the film's innumerable battles, making them harder to follow rather than exciting.

"Clash of the Titans" is also burdened by a numskull plot notion. The idea is that though those ancient Greeks lived in a world where the gods were quite real and unimaginably powerful, these idiots decide to declare war on them, which is the short-sighted equivalent of teasing your younger brother even though he has the power to snap his fingers and turn you to stone.

Though it's not clear why they agreed to participate, having top actors play the gods -- Liam Neeson is Zeus! Ralph Fiennes is Hades! -- doesn't help things. Neeson looks lost in the godly costumes, and Fiennes, perhaps hoping no one will notice it's him, speaks largely in sinister whispers.

While the gods are going through their paces and bemoaning the absence of human worship, Perseus, a demigod like his namesake Percy Jackson in the equally pedestrian "The Lightning Thief," is making his way in the world and discovering that he is the son of Zeus.

Perseus spends years with the adoptive fisherfolk parents Spyros and Marmara (the odd couple pairing of Pete Postlethwaite and Elizabeth McGovern) who found him floating in the sea. Spyros is one of those fed-up-with-the-gods folks who is fond of ominously saying, "One day, someone is going to have to take a stand." Guess who.

Back in the Greek city of Athos, the anti-gods movement is moving full steam ahead. Then Hades comes to town and puts a good scare into the populace, telling them that unless they sacrifice their beloved princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), he will unleash the dread Kraken -- not the most fearsome name for a monster but there you have it -- and Athos will be destroyed.

Because he is the only demigod in town and because he is irked beyond measure at the Olympians for their part in his parents' death, Perseus agrees to look for a way to kill the Kraken. He takes a crack team of warriors and adventurers with him, including the canny veteran soldier Draco, nicely played by Mads Mikkelsen.

Guided by the ageless but attractive Io (Gemma Arterton) and dogged by the horrific Calibos (Jason Flemyng), Perseus and his pals take on an entire Noah's ark of inhuman adversaries, including enormous scorpions on steroids called scorpiochs and the deadly Medusa, which turns out to be more or less a snake in a bikini top. Even the beloved mechanical owl from the 1981 version makes a cameo.

As played by Worthington, who's making a career of sullen heroes, Perseus insists he wants to defeat the Kraken as a man, not a god, which is a bit of wishful thinking that we all know can't be sustained forever. Neither, as it turns out, can our interest in this middling effort. When the most thrilling thing about a film turns out to be its title, even unleashing the Kraken won't be payoff enough.

If you caught Miley Cyrus' "The Last Song" and you still have not cried your eyes dry, the see-how-we-mourn melodrama "The Greatest" might serve to wring out the last of your tears.
First-time writer-director Shana Feste's psych-101 study shows us the sloppy, lingering process of grieving can play out on a neat and tidy timetable, where everybody gets a catharsis and returns home healed.

While Feste tugs — or yanks and claws — shamelessly at those proverbial heartstrings, her story of a teenage son's death is made tearily tolerable by grim, intense though sometimes excessive performances by Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon and Carey Mulligan.

Continuing a breakout year that brought her an Academy Award nomination for "An Education," Mulligan is the greatest thing about "The Greatest," her quiet, magnetic grace anchoring a lot of other elements that easily could have blown up into one long ululation of anguish.

The next-greatest thing about the movie is co-star Aaron Johnson, potentially on the verge of his own breakout year with two lead roles, in the hilarious superhero comedy "Kick-Ass" and as the young John Lennon in "Nowhere Boy."

As departed teen Bennett Brewer, Johnson shares sweet, aching moments of new love with Mulligan's Rose that really help viewers grieve along with those he leaves behind after he's abruptly snatched away.

Bennett and Rose's long, shy high school courtship plays out in fleeting flashbacks that are the most authentic and moving moments of "The Greatest."

After they finally come together for one night, a car wreck takes Bennett's life, leaving his parents, Allen and Grace (Brosnan and Sarandon) to do the familiar dance of mourning we've seen a few too many times on screen, one spouse stiff-arming away his grief in denial and the other immersing herself in hers.

Then Rose comes calling to say she's pregnant with Bennett's child. She's welcomed into the Bennett household by Allen, while Grace stews and resents her presence.

The only place Grace finds solace is at the hospital bedside of the coma-stricken man (Michael Shannon) whose car struck her son's and who was the last person to speak with her boy.

Feste weaves in a younger, black-sheep-ish brother (Johnny Simmons), an underachiever with a drug problem who of course feels invisible to his parents in the afterglow of his "martyred" brother. And he has his own contrived mini-drama with a grief junkie (Zoe Kravitz) he meets in a counseling group.

Like a college creative-writing project, "The Greatest" is overloaded with little symmetries, stagy outbursts, strained revelations, a finale that mends too cleanly. People grieve in their own ways, but "The Greatest" showcases only the biggest, most theatrical varieties.

The movie might have resonated more if it threw out some of the grief-counseling cliches and let the idiosyncrasies of the characters dictate more of the drama.

But if all you want is a good cry, "The Greatest" will comply. Tears are infectious, so when actors this good bawl their eyes out, more than a few people in the audience will sniffle and sob along with them.

'DANCING ACROSS BORDERS' (No rating, 1:28, in English and Khmer) Charity is always double-edged, but you wouldn't know that from this determinedly cheerful, no-frills documentary assembled by Anne Bass, a prominent Manhattan patron of the arts. Plucking Sokvannara Sar, a happy teenager, from his home in Cambodia and installing him in the School of American Ballet in New York, Ms. Bass lauds his dedication in the face of years of alienation and exhaustion. Watching him, viewers will see either a very fortunate young man or a beautiful protégé dancing as fast as he can to please everyone but himself. (Catsoulis)20100401

'AN EDUCATION' (PG-13, 1:40) Jenny, a London schoolgirl in the early 1960s — played with verve and brass by Carey Mulligan — learns the ways of the world at the hands of an older gentleman (Peter Sarsgaard), who turns out to be sleazier and less worldly than he seems at first. Adapted by Nick Hornby from a memoir by Lynn Bradley and directed by Lone Scherfig, this film is a bit too charmed by its own period atmosphere to take account of the uglier implications of the story it tells. Balancing a hyperbolic screenplay with restrained special effects, the filmmakers transform the area around Anchorage and Wasilla into a playground for damaged souls and Old Testament mischief. ★ 'THE HURT LOCKER' (R, 2:10) In this tense, insightful film about a United States Army bomb-disposal squad in Iraq, Kathryn Bigelow has made a crackerjack action picture that is also a drama of character, psychology and ideas. Jeremy Renner, as a soldier who approaches danger with the conviction of an artist and the compulsiveness of an addict, is simply amazing, and the rest of the cast, notably Brian Geraghty and Anthony Mackie, is nearly as strong. 'LBS.' (No rating, 1:39) Six years after it was first shown at Sundance, this earnest little indie about a young Brooklyn man's battle with obesity finally arrives in theaters. Carmine Famiglietti, who wrote the script with the director, Matthew Bonifacio, and plays the protagonist, lost more than 100 pounds while the movie was being shot; unfortunately, that's the most interesting thing about the film. ★ 'MID-AUGUST LUNCH' (No rating, 1:15, in Italian) One of this film's deepest satisfactions is its characters' complete lack of rumination. 'OUR FAMILY WEDDING' (PG-13, 1:40) Strident and sickly sweet, Rick Famuyiwa's cartoonish feature follows the nuptials of a Mexican-American daddy's girl (America Ferrera) and an African-American doctor (Lance Gross). Leaving no racial stereotype or stale joke unturned, the movie is a train wreck of nonstop ethnic slurs and painful miscasting (Forest Whitaker as the degenerate father of the groom). And please don't ask what happens when the goat gets into the Viagra. (Catsoulis)20100401

★ 'A PROPHET (UN PROPHÈTE)' (R, 2:29, in French, Arabic and Corsu) Jacques Audiard directs this thrilling French film about a young convict (Tahar Rahim) whose prison sentence becomes a moral education as he learns to smuggle, to read, to murder, to survive. Two of his best teachers are the prison system itself and a gang leader played by the tremendous Niels Arestrup. A must-see. (Dargis)20100401

'REMEMBER ME' (PG-13, 1:53) Love means never having to say you're sorry, particularly to the audience, in this lugubrious romance-family melodrama starring Robert Pattinson, a possibly promising screen performer in desperate need of an acting intervention. (Dargis)20100401

'REPO MEN' (R, 1:51) To audiences starved for quasi-medical gore, this gruesome dystopic satire should help fill the void left by "Nip/Tuck." (Holden)20100401

★ 'THE RUNAWAYS' (R, 1:42) A biopic about the '70s teenage all-girl rock band — loose, messy and passionate, with fine performances from Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, the group's lead singer and sex symbol, and Kristen Stewart as the Joan Jett, the quiet, disciplined guitarist. (Scott)20100401

★ 'THE SECRET OF KELLS' (No rating, 1:15) This animated film about a famous Irish illuminated manuscript is an exquisite showcase of hand-drawn animation techniques. The story is more conventional, but the delicacy and panache of the director Tomm Moore's imagery make the movie special. (Scott)20100401

'SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE' (R, 1:45) Jim Field Smith's film about a nebbishy airport security guard and a gorgeous, kind, hockey-loving blonde is part over-the-top gross-out comedy and part soggy romantic comedy. In either case, it's out of its league. (Hale)20100401

'SHUTTER ISLAND' (R, 2:18) Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert! It's Martin Scorsese's weakest movie since "Bringing Out the Dead." (Scott)20100401

'A SINGLE MAN' (No rating, 1:39) Colin Firth, with a magnificent depth of feeling, plays the grieving, closeted gay professor of the film's title in Tom Ford's ambitious and touching adaptation of the 1964 landmark novel by Christopher Isherwood. (Dargis)20100401

'THE OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS 2010' (No rating; running time for each program: 1:41) Three of the five live-action nominees deal with children in peril, which means that the other two don't have a chance. The animated field features the return of Wallace and Gromit, who, as usual, leave everyone else in the dust. (Scott)20100401

'VALENTINE'S DAY' (PG-13, 1:30) A dire romantic comedy directed, in a manner of speaking, by Garry Marshall, that lacks romance and comedy but not famous grinning, grimacing faces (Ashton Kutcher, Jamie Foxx, Shirley MacLaine). (Dargis)20100401

★ 'VINCERE' (No rating, 2:08, in Italian) In his sustained, alternatingly exhausting and aesthetically exhilarating howl of a film, the veteran Italian director Marco Bellocchio brilliantly personalizes Mussolini's rise to power through a fictional retelling of his seduction and catastrophically violent betrayal of his reputed first wife, Ida Dalser. 'WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY' (PG, 1:26) This moderately engaging documentary about the renaissance of Disney animation during the golden decade (1984-94) that yielded "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" is a sly retrospective exercise in corporate self-congratulation masquerading as an insider's tell-all. 'THE WHITE RIBBON' (R, 2:25, in German) Germany before World War I: child abuse, class resentment and other seeds from which Nazism will sprout, presented in gorgeous black and white and with dour self-importance by Michael Haneke, the most be-laureled scold in modern European cinema. FILMS BY MARTÍN REJTMAN (Wednesday and Thursday) Two deadpan, absurdist comedies by the Argentine director who helped stake out the new, independent cinema in his home country. "Silvia Prieto" (1999) is centered on a woman (Rosario Bléfari) who finds her identity slipping away on her 27th birthday (Mr. Rejtman will be present for the 7 p.m. screening on Thursday), while "The Magic Gloves" (2003) follows a livery driver (the popular singer-songwriter Vicentico) as he circulates through a city of disaffected eccentrics in a doomed attempt to get a toehold in the one-size-fits-all glove business. THE GROUNDBREAKING BILL GUNN (Friday through Sunday) This survey of Gunn's too-brief career as a pioneering black writer and director in Hollywood includes his best-known film, the 1973 vampire parable "Ganja & Hess," to be presented Friday at 6:50 and 9:15 p.m. in its complete 100-minute version, recently restored by the Museum of Modern Art, and introduced by the film historian Pearl Bowser. Movie Review: Clash of the Titans (2010) - Rope of Silicon

As someone that once loved the original 1981 Ray Harryhausen-produced Clash of the Titans, I now look back fondly at that picture, but recognize it as a silly (nearly) 30-year-old epic romance. I can only look back with nostalgia and fond memories. I imagine Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans remake will make a similar impression on the youth of today, though this is a much more rock 'em-sock 'em telling of the original story, but still just as silly. Boasting updated effects, gooier scorpion deaths and an even larger monster from the deep, this remake places action first, story second and characters last. Yet the story itself is fun enough that I was able to have a good time.

In comparing this one to the first film, the biggest difference is the motivation of the lead character Perseus (Sam Worthington), a demigod born of Zeus. In the original, the journey he follows comes as a result of his love for Andromeda as the Gods have called for her sacrifice in order to save the city of Jobba. The remake follows a similar journey, but Perseus is spurred on following the death of his adoptive family at the hands of the Gods. Here his goal is to save the city of Argos and do so as a man, ignoring his godly bloodlines, proving men don't need the Gods to be great.

"Clash of the Titans" is a Warner Bros. release, directed by Louis Leterrier and is rated PG-13 for fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief sensuality. The running time is 1 hour 50 minutes

The cast includes Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, Alexa Davalos, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Huston, Luke Evans and Nicholas Hoult.

Like the original film, Perseus and his fellow journeymen do battle with giant scorpions, receive guidance from the blind witches, travel to the Underworld and face off with the evil Medussa. It's the same story with a bit of a twist and as such I enjoyed it just as I did the original. It's a CGI-filled epic, loaded with monsters and a ridiculous romantic bend, and the story holds this foolishness together long enough for the film to be enjoyable as the diversion it's meant to be.

Scripted by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (the duo behind the abysmal Aeon Flux) along with Travis Beacham the film runs on thin threads woven by the original scripter Beverley Cross. While the story is not exactly the same, the diversions are mere formalities and Leterrier's ability to film action as he did in Transporter 2 and The Incredible Hulk remains.

Leading that action is Sam Worthington, with a domestic film career that hasn't done much to show us his ability to act in a dramatic role, but with Terminator Salvation, Avatar and now Clash of the Titans under his belt I would say his ability to act against a green screen has been proven. Whether he can turn this current career of corny speeches, a couple of grumbles and a wave of the sword into anything will be tested soon enough in John Madden's The Debt and Last Night opposite Keira Knightley. He doesn't appear to be of the no-brains-and-all-brawn action star niche so his likelihood of being typecast doesn't seem immediately possible, but there's no real way to gauge his talent when all we've really seen of him is a talent for chopping up CG creatures and robots to this point.

Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) plays the soft spoken Io, something of a guide to the group as she has been watching over Perseus all his life. Also among Perseus's traveling band, Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) plays the gruff Argos military leader Draco with the unique charisma we've come to expect from Mikkelsen and Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy and A Single Man) plays the young warrior Eusebios, which reminded me a lot of the timid yet confident performance of Garrett Hedlund in Troy as Achilles's cousin Patroclus.

On Mount Olympus two names stand out, Liam Neeson is commanding as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes plays his scorned brother Hades, channeling his performance as the whispering menace Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise, only this time with a lot more hair — and it works.

The marketing team at Warner Bros. has pretty much ruined any surprise the CG monsters have to offer, short of actually giving a full reveal of Medusa's face (at least to my knowledge). They've even gone so far as to completely reveal the monstrous Kraken, the titan that serves as the film's massive finale. It's a blunder if there ever was one, hurting the chances to offer the audience any form of awe-inspired surprises. Next is the post-production 2D-to-3D conversion, a weak money grab that is evident in every scene. Some scenes, for that matter, can be watched without the glasses entirely with slight edge blurring where a faint hint of depth would otherwise be seen amidst the brightened image to offset the dimming of the polarized 3D glasses.

I would never recommend anyone see this film in the converted 3D as it is only a reason for greedy theater owners and the studio to take a larger bite out of your wallet and offer little to nothing in return. However, I would say anyone looking for a goofy good time at the theater with a big effects driven monster movie this one satisfies on that front. This is the rock 'n' roll battle of men and Gods, and up until the ridiculous final romantic drum beat, it serves as such.

In addition to "The Karate Kid," Belgrad, 44, and Columbia co-president Matt Tolmach, 45, are developing sequels and reboots to such 1980s properties as "Ghostbusters," "21 Jump Street" and "The Smurfs."

20th Century Fox will release a feature film based on the '80s action-adventure TV series "The A-Team" this summer.

"Grown-ups are always looking for movies they could share with their kids," Belgrad adds.

With "The Karate Kid," he notes, Will Smith took that idea a step further, suggesting remaking one of his favorite childhood movies with his 11-year-old son, Jaden, starring.

The new "Karate Kid," due in June, shifts the action to Beijing, attempting to add a dash of culture clash to the familiar story.

Other remakes and sequels, like "Clash of the Titans" and "Tron: Legacy," bring modern technology to movies that time has dated.

"('Tron' director) Steve Lisberger told me that we've made the movie that people think they remember seeing when they were 8 years old," says "Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski. "The original pushed the envelope in a way that we can't do. But we can take things that have been simmering in people's minds for 25 years and bring them to life."

Kosinski shot "Tron: Legacy" entirely in 3-D. Warner Bros. converted "Clash of the Titans" to 3-D after the fact, hoping to cash in on the "Avatar"-fueled mania for the format.

Others are taking a stab at modern relevance with their films.

Michael Douglas' Gordon Gekko has been refashioned as an antihero, warning business leaders of impending doom in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

The "Red Dawn" remake has the Chinese, not the Soviets, invading America.

"Hot Tub Time Machine" star and '80s icon John Cusack would be just as happy to consign the whole decade to the attic.

"I remember it being a kind of forced Prozac happy time without the Prozac," Cusack says. "We were sort of like optimism by martial law. There were jumbotrons of Ronald Reagan everywhere. There were Dr. Pepper people dancing. There was this militant patriotism, nationalism, faux spirituality to it. I look back on it as an intense, dark decade."

Maybe next time, he could set the hot tub to the '60s.

Who wants to be a god, anyway?

That's the principle twist inserted into the new "Clash of the Titans," a remake of the sometimes fondly recalled, technologically dated 1981 film about the fury of the gods of Mount Olympus and the rise of the young, earthly demigod Perseus.

This time, Perseus (Sam Worthington) bears a distaste for his godlike nature: He just wants to be a regular dude and do normal guy stuff — like ride his winged horse Pegasus on the beach.

It's perhaps a fitting updating of the film for an era marked by distrust for political leaders and Internet-empowered masses. Now, even the gods are spurned in their own movie: Deity is so out.

On Mount Olympus, that golden round table in the clouds, Zeus (Liam Neeson, in the part played by Laurence Olivier in the original) is angry at an ungrateful mankind and lets loose his brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) to destroy the city of Argos.

As a new citizen of Argos, Perseus (the son of Zeus) doesn't much like this. He embarks on the familiar journey (particularly familiar for those who saw the recent, bouncier teen version "Percy Jackson & the Olympians") in defeating a number of mythical creatures, including a serpentine Medusa and the sea monster Kraken — which, rest assured, is eventually released.

Directed by Louis Leterrier (2008's "The Incredible Hulk"), "The Clash of the Titans" will likely lure moviegoers chiefly by its digital effects (which are largely quite good but forgettable) and its promise of 3-D spectacle (which disappoints altogether).

Like several blockbusters being released now in the post-"Avatar" environment, "Clash of the Titans" was made in 2-D but converted to 3-D in post-production. Audiences will hardly notice any increased depth. Though this is preferable to the distraction of most 3-D, it's surely not worth the hike in ticket price.

Worthington, the Australian actor who stared in "Avatar," knows a little something about 3-D. Here, he trades aqua blue-colored skin for an equally artificial bronze spray tan in the mold of "300" torsos.

Worthington was largely eclipsed by the surrounding effects of "Avatar"; it's an interesting irony that few would be able to name the star of the biggest box-office grosser of all-time. In "Titans," his presence is more explicit but also less substantial.

With a crew cut atop his almost perfectly spherical head, Worthington grits his way through the film and does plenty of dramatic leaping while brandishing a sword. But he doesn't supply the charisma that the movie needs and the whole thing feels like a joyless slog.

Fiennes's appearances provide a jolt. Arriving always with his head curiously fixed within a cloud of swirling black smog, he knows how to make an entrance. His part is surely the best in the movie and he's clearly having fun. He hisses in a horse whisper: "What could be more beautiful than death?"

But that's not nearly enough to engender the kind of fondness people feel for the original "Clash of the Titans," campy though it is.

"Clash of the Titans," a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief sensuality. Running time: 106 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Jet Li still is fearless, still a hero, but he's showing new and richer acting moves in "The Warlords," his latest Chinese historical epic that teams him to good effect with fellow Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro.

In "Fearless" and especially "Hero," Li already had proven he's more than just an action master, and "The Warlords" gives him the chance to play both sides of the fence — not only the unadulterated idol, but also the hero after he's been corrupted by ambition, envy and more than a trace of megalomania.

The U.S. release of "The Warlords" is choppy from some inelegant editing to trim the film from its two-hour-plus running time for Asian markets, and director Peter Chan handles epic battles and mass slaughter far more artfully than quiet human drama.

Between its often spectacular action sequences, "The Warlords" lapses into some prolonged and hokey rants about brotherhood, duty, expediency and honor. While Li, Lau and Kaneshiro bring warmth, humor and pathos to their roles as blood brothers bound for tragedy, they're better to watch in action or when quietly brooding than when pontificating on what they owe to one another and the warriors they lead.

Set in the mid-19th century, "The Warlords" casts Li as General Pang, who somewhat ignobly survives a massacre of his entire army by Taiping Rebellion forces. Falling in with a village of bandits, Pang forges a deep friendship with the gang's leaders, Er Hu (Lau) and Wu Yang (Kaneshiro).

Their bond deepens in encounters with armed oppressors, the three men swearing a fraternal oath that runs deeper than blood. (They pledge their loyalty with an act of barbarity that acclimates viewers to startling brutality to come; "The Warlords" adheres without compromise to a crusader code that's not for the squeamish.)

Pang inspires Er Hu and Wu Yang to join the Qing Dynasty forces battling Taiping soldiers. Years of savage combat, terrible privation and underdog glory follow, the three heroes' bond strengthened by the enemy blood they shed but also strained by the clash of Pang's mercilessness and Er Hu's compassion, with Wu Yang torn between.

Then, of course, there's a woman. Pang falls for Er Hu's mate Lian (Xu Jinglei), the love triangle adding friction and provoking an act of domestic violence more disturbing than any of the skewering, butchering and maiming in the battle scenes.

Chan orchestrates the action on a colossal scale, and it's real in-the-trenches stuff — nasty, ruthless, cruel — a bloodthirsty counterpoint to the ballet of warfare in Li's "Hero" or Kaneshiro and Lau's "House of Flying Daggers," both from director Zhang Yimou.

As the trials and differences of our three main men swell to overly operatic proportions, the toll of war on the masses escalates, as well.

Chan opens the film with an impressive "Gone With the Wind" shot of a battlefield stacked with corpses. He tops himself late in the film with an even ghastlier aftermath of extermination, a scene to sap the fighting spirit of the fiercest soldier.

Though reveling in battle from a cinematic perspective, "The Warlords" really is an anti-war film.

"The Warlords," a Magnolia Pictures release, is rated R for sequences of strong violence. Running time: 110 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Sam Worthington Confirms Involvement in 'Dan Dare' Movie

Earlier this month we reported on a casting rumor that Aussie actor Sam Worthington would be playing Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future in an upcoming adaptation of the sci-fi British comic book series about the chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet. I didn't think the news was false, however it's always good to get solid confirmation from the person involved. MTV talked with Worthington recently, who confirmed that he is involved with Dan Dare as well as another comic book adaptation called The Last Days of American Crime (first reported last November). Best of all, he seems pretty damn excited about taking on Dan Dare.

"'Dan Dare,' same type of thing — we're seeing how they're going to develop it and where they want it to go," he said. "I'm at that stage now where I want to do movies where I get my $16 worth. … Something like 'Dan Dare,' there was something in the reboot by [Garth Ennis] that was amazing."

If he enjoyed the series enough and feels like a Dan Dare movie could be one that is worth paying $16 for, then I'm all for it, too. That reboot he's talking about is a reboot of the comic that launched in 2008 through Virgin Comics (pick it up on Amazon). Introduced in 1950, the property is one of the UK's most successful comic series ever and is described as a British version of Buck Rogers. Originally, no writer or director was attached, but I have a feeling they have a script or spec at least, or else Worthington wouldn't be speaking so enthusiastically about this. I'm not even sure why, but I'm pretty damn excited about this adaptation as well.

Uma Thurman's latest movie, Motherhood, is a laughing joke.

According to the British box office, the first week Motherhood came out, it took in £9 on its opening day, which means just one person watched it that day. It didn't get much better than that. The opening weekend took in just £88 in its opening weekend, which means less than 12 people went to see it.

The failure of the film has taken a toll on the movie producers. Jane Edelbaum said, 'Think about how much crap succeeds at the cinema. Motherhood is not bad. It's a very decent movie. I've seen movies that are not half as good."

The movie tells the story of a stressed mother who struggles to raise her kids while trying to pursue a writing career. The film cost $5 million to make but saw no profits.

Film Critic Barry Norman claimed this failure might be due to the lack of promotion. He said, "Good God. I have never heard of anything like this before. This is not some small, independent movie. It's astonishing that only about 11 people could be bothered to go and see Uma Thurman."

He added, "The reviews were very poor indeed but that alone isn't enough to explain this. It's a reasonable assumption that there was a marketing and advertising catastrophe and people didn't know it was showing."

'It's not a significant part but it will give her a good taste of life in the movie business. 'Lourdes has made it clear she wants some kind of career in the entertainment industry and her mum is more than happy to help. 'She's already an incredible dancer, thanks to years of classes and she's also been having singing training.' Previously in 2007 Madonna refused to let Lourdes - nicknamed Lola - star in a Harry Potter film after she was offered a role.

Ebert to produce new movie review show - Aiken Standard

The Pulitzer Prize-winning reviewer writes he would like to make "occasional appearances" on the air. Ebert lost his ability to speak after cancer surgery.

Ebert also writes: "the Thumbs will return," referring to the well-known "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" reviews.

Meanwhile, Disney-ABC Domestic Television announced it will cease producing "At The Movies," the successor show to the movie review programs Ebert had with the late Chicago Tribune critic Gene Siskel, and later Richard Roeper of the Sun-Times.

The last show will air the weekend of Aug. 14.

ACORN: The Movie – Is It Possible? - Front Page

The last few months have been full of conservatives railing against the anti-American attitude that is all too present in the wildly successful 3D sensation Avatar. Once the hype over that film dies something will have to take its place; what if there was a film about ACORN? As interesting as such a film could be, we probably shouldn't hold our breath.

On Wednesday, Red Eye host Greg Gutfeld discussed the prospect of an ACORN movie:

"If ACORN was a right-wing entity and the pranksters were lefties, this would quickly become a mega-million dollar movie, directed by Steven Soderbergh, with George Clooney as the bad guy."

Hollywood loves to distort the truth so why would something like the facts stop them from spinning the ACORN story to their benefit? Here is where we would find a film about a corrupt drug company (Clooney can play the evil doctor) and corrupt practices that will be exposed by Matt Damon (puppet for the late Howard Zinn) and Marion Cotillard (9/11 truther) who play a couple of left wing vigilantes. Tom Cruise could make a cameo as a radical Republican senator who is on the drug company's payroll.

Odds are it would win a handful of Academy Awards due to the "heroic truth-telling nature" of the film. It would also most likely be "A Spike Lee Joint" produced by Oliver Stone.

But what if I were to pitch the ACORN film myself? I would most likely be citing great social commentary films of the past like Network. I might also mention All The President's Men, seeing that the politics of that film may get their attention. After all, they have to love a story about heroic journalists. Unfortunately, today's studio execs have never seen either film. They also know very little about the ACORN story.

"We heard it was a bunch of highly paid radical right-wingers that set out to destroy President Obama," they said with confidence. I would respond, "No, it was actually a couple of courageous journalists who uncovered corruption in our inner cities. They have single handedly squandered a major player that was to blame in part for the destruction of our major cities." I would be told that I watch too much FOX News and the studio execs would break into laughter.

"Let me tell you who I have lined up for cast and director," I said with a smile. Before I could go further I would feel two security guards ask me to leave. The studio execs continued laughing about their FOX News comment. I suppose they wouldn't have liked my choices for cast and director anyway, which is unfortunate. Upon being escorted out I would hear the two execs discussing how James Cameron was robbed at the Oscars (ha!).

The story of two journalists uncovering corruption at ACORN could be a great film. It doesn't have to be a movie about the Right and the Left, but rather about how the government isn't always the answer. Today we see too many mind numbing (instead of thought provoking) ideologically driven films from the Hollywood left, so we shouldn't place any bets for an honest film about the infamous association of community organizers.

I penned the suckiest movie ever - sorry! - New York Post

This month, "Battlefield Earth," the blockbuster bomb based on the novel by Sciento logy founder L. Ron Hubbard, won the Razzie for "Worst Movie of the Decade." J.D. Sha piro, the film's first screenwriter, accepted the award in person. Shapiro, who also wrote the screenplay for "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "We Married Margo," and is developing a King Arthur spoof called "524 AD" (524AD.com), explains what it's like to be attached to one of Hol lywood's most notorious flops.

LET me start by apologiz ing to anyone who went to see "Battlefield Earth."

It wasn't as I intended -- promise. No one sets out to make a train wreck. Actually, comparing it to a train wreck isn't really fair to train wrecks, because people actually want to watch those.

It started, as so many of my choices do, with my Willy Wonker.

It was 1994, and I had read an article in Premiere magazine saying that the Celebrity Center, the Scientology epicenter in Los Angeles, was a great place to meet women.

Willy convinced me to go check it out. Touring the building, I didn't find any eligible women at first, but I did meet Karen Hollander, president of the center, who said she was a fan of "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." We ended up talking for over two hours. She told me why Scientology is so great. I told her that, when it comes to organized religion, anything a person does to reward, threaten and try to control people by using an unknown like the afterlife is dangerous.

Nonetheless, Karen called me a few days later asking if I'd be interested in turning any of L. Ron Hubbard's books into movies. Eventually, I had dinner with John Travolta, his wife Kelly Preston, Karen -- about 10 Scientologists in all. John asked me, "So, J.D., what brought you to Scientology?"

I told him. John smiled and replied, "We have tech that can help you handle that." I don't know if he meant they had technology that would help me get laid or technology that would stop Willy from doing the majority of my thinking.

I RESEARCHED Scientology before signing on to the movie, to make sure I wasn't making anything that would indoctrinate people. I took a few courses, including the Purification Rundown, or Purif. You go to CC every day, take vitamins and go in and out of a sauna so toxins are released from your body. You're supposed to reach an "End Point." I never did, but I was bored so I told them I had a vision of L. Ron. They said, "What did he say?" "Pull my finger," was my response. They said I was done.

During my Scientology research, I met an employee who I instantly had a crush on. She was kind of a priestess, and had dedicated her life to working for the church by becoming a Sea Org member. She said that she signed a billion-year contract. I said, "What! Really?" She said she got paid a small stipend of $50 a week, to which I said, "Can you get an advance on the billion years, like say, a mere $500,000?" And then she said as a Sea Org member, you can't have sex unless you're married. I asked her if she was married. She said yes. So I said, "Great! That means we can have sex!"

As far as I know, I am the only non-Scientologist to ever be on their cruise ship, the Freewind. I was a bit of an oddity, walking around in a robe, sandals, smoking Cuban cigars and drinking fine scotch (Scientologists are not allowed to drink while taking courses). I also got one of the best massages ever. My friends asked if I got a "happy ending." I said, "Yes, I got off the ship."

But if you're reading this to get the dirt on Scientology, sorry, no one ever tried to force me to do anything.

Even after all the "trouble" I'd gotten into, people at the church liked me, so I read "Battlefield Earth" and agreed to come up with a pitch to take to studios.

I met with Mike Marcus, the president of MGM, and pitched him my take. He loved it, and the next day negotiations went under way. A few days after I finished the script, a very excited Travolta called, told me he "loved it," and wanted to have dinner. At dinner, John said again how much he loved the script and called it "The 'Schindler's List' of sci-fi."

My script was very, VERY different than what ended up on the screen. My screenplay was darker, grittier and had a very compelling story with rich characters. What my screenplay didn't have was slow motion at every turn, Dutch tilts, campy dialogue, aliens in KISS boots, and everyone wearing Bob Marley wigs.

Shortly after that, John officially attached himself to the project. Then several A-list directors expressed interest in making the movie, MGM had a budget of $100 million, and life was grrrrreat! I got studio notes that were typical studio notes. Nothing too crazy. I incorporated the notes I felt worked, blew off the bad ones and did a polish. I sent it to the studio, thinking the next I'd hear is what director is attached.

Then I got another batch of notes. I thought it was a joke. They changed the entire tone. I knew these notes would kill the movie. The notes wanted me to lose key scenes, add ridiculous scenes, take out some of the key characters. I asked Mike where they came from. He said, "From us." But when I pressed him, he said, "From John's camp, but we agree with them."

I refused to incorporate the notes into the script and was fired.

IHAVE no idea why they wanted to go in this new di rection, but here's what I heard from someone in John's camp: Out of all the books L. Ron wrote, this was the one the church founder wanted most to become a movie. He wrote extensive notes on how the movie should be made.

Many people called it a Scientology movie. It wasn't when I wrote it, and I don't feel it was in the final product. Yes, writers put their beliefs into a story. Sometimes it's subtle (I guess L. Ron had something against the color purple, I have no idea why), sometimes not so subtle (L. Ron hated psychiatry and psychologists, thus the reason, and I'm just guessing here, that the bad aliens were called "Psychlos").

The only time I saw the movie was at the premiere, which was one too many times.

Once it was decided that I would share a writing credit, I wanted to use my pseudonym, Sir Nick Knack. I was told I couldn't do that, because if a writer gets paid over a certain amount of money, they can't. I could have taken my name completely off the movie, but my agent and attorney talked me out of it. There was a lot of money at stake.

Now, looking back at the movie with fresh eyes, I can't help but be strangely proud of it. Because out of all the sucky movies, mine is the suckiest.

In the end, did Scientology get me laid? What do you think? No way do you get any action by boldly going up to a woman and proclaiming, "I wrote Battlefield Earth!" If anything, I'm trying to figure out a way to bottle it and use it as birth control. I'll make a mint!

Movie Review: 'Greenberg' - Delaware County Daily Times

NEW YORK (AP) --- The lesson Ben Stiller's praise-hungry actor learned in "Tropic Thunder" was that "you never go full retard" when playing a simpleton in hopes of snaring an Academy Award.

Stiller himself goes full nutcase, or near enough, in "Greenberg," and while the results won't earn him an Oscar, it turned out pretty well.

As the title character, a guy pausing at mid-life to lick his wounds, heal some old rifts and maybe open a few new ones, Stiller manages quite a nice performance.

Rather than the silly, caricatured buttheads on which Stiller's made his fortune, in "Greenberg" he plays a true butthead, a man with deep emotional scars, a backpack full of guilt and a bushel of regrets. Here's a man whose excess of self-involvement, self-doubt and self-loathing often make him unpleasant to be around — so the fact that he's still an engaging character is a testament to the fine line Stiller manages to walk.

Stiller is paired to great effect with Greta Gerwig in a breakout role as an aspiring musician with her own self-esteem issues, a woman who kind of falls for Greenberg despite his off-putting demeanor.

The film marks a nice rebound for director Noah Baumbach, who made the heartbreaking divorce portrait "The Squid and the Whale," then stumbled with the stagy, phony sibling drama "Margot at the Wedding."

With a story Baumbach developed with producer, co-star and real-life wife Jennifer Jason Leigh, "Greenberg" is a perceptive look at coming to terms with, if not entirely embracing, the life you weren't expecting and by no means wanted.

Stiller's Roger Greenberg is a man whose own musical ambitions led nowhere. Now a seemingly successful carpenter in New York City, Roger is fresh out of a mental hospital after a nervous breakdown, and he heads home to Los Angeles to crash at his brother's place while sibling and family are vacationing in Vietnam.

Forty-year-old Roger tries to reconnect with an old bandmate (Rhys Ifans) and an ex-girlfriend (Leigh), but the actual connection comes with his brother's twenty-something personal assistant Florence Marr (Gerwig), who's helping to look after the family dog.

An awkward, fleeting, I-like-you-this-moment-but-despise-you-the-next love story tries to unfold around them, Roger continually spoiling things with a mean mouth that doesn't seem linked to either his brain or his heart.

Florence and Roger might be kindred spirits only in the sense that she's a sweet, fitful doormat always in search of a good stomping, while he's an often nasty guy with big, heavy boots.

This could have turned into an odious story about emotional sadomasochism. Yet like "The Squid and the Whale," ''Greenberg" has a real heartbeat, a feeling of happy-sad authenticity that makes you understand and appreciate the romantic pull between these irresolute lovers, even if you don't exactly root for it to succeed.

Leigh, one of the leads in "Margot at the Wedding," turns up here for only a couple of sturdy scenes.

Ifans is a quiet scene-stealer. Often cast as a kooky Brit, Ifans here tones it down and becomes a real person, a man who, unlike Greenberg, has succeeded at living with his failures and now simply aims to make the best of what he has.

The film belongs to Stiller and Gerwig, though (and maybe to the adorable dog Mahler, the magnet that keeps bringing Roger and Florence together when it seems they no longer can stomach each other).

Roger and Florence are two people in varying stages of damage, his extreme, hers potentially so if the years and mileage keep wearing her down the way they have so far. They might be the cure for each other or simply a temporary salve — or even the stuff of future cautionary remembrances that begin with the phrase, "Remember that psycho I used to date?"

What's lovely about their relationship, succeed or fail, is its honesty. Though Los Angeles landmarks appear throughout "Greenberg," Roger and Florence are anything but shallow, standard-issue Hollywood lovers.

These are two genuine people making clumsy, hesitant advances and retreats toward and away from each other.

For a fresh face such as Gerwig, it could be a career-making role. For a face as familiar (and generally predictable) as Stiller, it's the finest work he's done, a revelation that the star of "Meet the Parents" and "Night at the Museum" has more to offer than just broad comedy.

"Greenberg," a Focus Features release, is rated R for some strong sexuality, drug use, and language. Running time: 107 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Movie Review: 'How to Train Your Dragon' - Delaware County Daily Times

NEW YORK (AP) --- What a refreshing change "How to Train Your Dragon" brings to the cartoon world: The creatures are not all that cute, and they do not speak a word.

DreamWorks Animation has been at the head of the pack for adorable, fast-talking critters with such movies as "Over the Hedge," ''Kung Fu Panda" and the "Madagascar" series.

With "How to Train Your Dragon," the filmmakers tone down the glib factor and tell a pretty good action yarn, a boy-and-his-dragon story filled with fiery Viking battles, swordplay and dazzling aerial imagery aboard the flying reptiles.

For small children, the movie may not rate as high on the laugh and sight-gag meter as some of those earlier, more slapstick-y DreamWorks tales. After a slow, rather droning start, though, "How to Train Your Dragon" takes off on an exhilarating ride through the ancient Norse world, the hardscrabble landscape also a pleasant change from the softer realms of other cartoons.

Based on Cressida Cowell's children's book, the movie follows the adventures of Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), the scrawny, misfit son of Viking chief and master dragon-slayer Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler).

A disappointment to his dad and a joke to his community, Hiccup is determined to make up for his lack of brawn by using his wits to bring down a Night Fury, the fiercest breed among the dragons that besiege his island village.

He actually succeeds, but finds he lacks the hard heart it takes to finish off the dragon. Instead, Hiccup feeds and nurses the wounded dragon, which he names Toothless.

A shrewd observer, Hiccup picks up on the finer points of dragon behavior from his new pet, which he applies to his dragon-slaying lessons run by blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson).

With his skills as a dragon whisperer, Hiccup becomes a local hero among the villagers and a rival for fierce classmate Astrid (America Ferrera).

Inevitably, Hiccup must prove his worth in battle, banding with his fellow trainees (played by a voice cast that includes Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) in an assault against a colossal dragon that would send a T-Rex scurrying for cover.

The voice work among the cast is a bit uneven, Baruchel's nasally monotone threatening to whine the movie to death early on.

DreamWorks has gotten good mileage out of a Scottish accent in the "Shrek" movies, so the filmmakers let Scotsmen Butler and Ferguson go to town with boisterous brogues that liven up the dialogue. But their voices also beg the question, why do the adults speak in Scottish accents and the youths in American ones? No biggie, just wondering.

In Cowell's book, the dragons also spoke in their own language. The filmmakers, including writer-directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois ("Lilo & Stitch"), wisely dispense with the talking reptiles.

The creatures are more fierce and mysterious in attack mode — and more comical when they fall under Hiccup's spell — without opening their yaps to chew the fat.

"How to Train Your Dragon" really soars in the visual department, the animators presenting a 3-D world of bleak, mythical beauty in the island's crags and mists. Some of the flying scenes are gorgeous, Toothless the dragon hovering above pillowy clouds against a shimmering night sky.

And to clarify an earlier point: While these dragons are not all that cute, Toothless, like any faithful pet, proves utterly endearing by the end.

"How to Train Your Dragon," a DreamWorks Animation release distributed by Paramount, is rated PG for sequences of intense action and some scary images, and brief mild language. Running time: 98 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Movie Review: 'Chloe' - Delaware County Daily Times

LOS ANGELES (AP) --- Atom Egoyan's sex thriller "Chloe" is a pure guilty pleasure, if you take away that part about pleasure.

The devoted cast led by Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried really burrows into the roles, but the intense performances cannot conceal the fact that these characters are shallow narcissists at their best and outright crazy people at their worst.

This marital story of infidelity, deceit and obsession is not much more absurd than "Fatal Attraction," one of the great guilty pleasures in screen history.

Yet "Chloe" rings false from the start, the story is dead on arrival from the moment suspicious wife Moore, convinced husband Neeson is cheating on her, hires call girl Seyfried to push the man's buttons and see if it's true.

Really, who does this rather than just confronting the lech and having it out?

There's something off, and off-putting, about each of these characters in the screenplay by Erin Cressida Wilson, who adapted "Chloe" from the equally lurid and unsatisfying French thriller "Nathalie."

The characters are so abnormal and their situation so contrived that it's impossible to sit back and enjoy the train wreck the way you can revel in Glenn Close murderously popping out of that bathtub one last time in "Fatal Attraction."

The tone and explicit sensuality of "Chloe" are reminiscent of earlier frank dramas from Egoyan such as "Exotica" and "Where the Truth Lies." The sex in "Chloe" is pretty tame and fleeting, though, robbing it of another guilty-pleasure component.

What's more boring than watching dull sex on screen is listening to people talk about dull sex on screen, and that's how the characters in "Chloe" spend much of their time.

The film Neeson was shooting when his wife, Natasha Richardson, was fatally injured in a skiing accident a year ago, "Chloe" casts him in a subordinate role as music professor David. The dominant relationship here is the one that plays out between Moore's gynecologist Catherine and Seyfried's prostitute Chloe.

Catherine and David's marriage has gone cold, and she feels she's losing touch with her 17-year-old son, Michael (Max Thieriot), who's more in sync with his dad.

After David misses a flight home on his birthday, spoiling the elaborate surprise party Catherine has arranged, she finds a text message and photo of him with a female student that stokes her suspicions.

What's a jealous wife to do? Catherine engages Chloe to test David's faithfulness (their marriage vows clearly did not include a provision against entrapment).

A sophisticated woman such as Catherine should be able to see what the audience realizes at the outset, that someone in this threesome may be more than a little nuts. But suspicion and anger escalate as Chloe relates intimate details of her encounters with David, stimulating dormant passions in Catherine.

Before long, director Egoyan is posing the questions, who's cheating on whom, who's fixating on whom? But who really cares?

These are not interesting people. Their actions are not believable. Where they end up brings no insight or satisfaction.

So maybe you'll feel a little guilty peering in on their misfortunes. But it'll be hard to take much pleasure from the experience.

"Chloe," a Sony Pictures Classics release, is rated R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue, nudity and language. Running time: 96 minutes. Two stars out of four.

And while their details were still quite vague, the information is sure to delight fans. It is known that Miley Cyrus will have a cameo and that the foursome somehow end up in Morocco. Sarah Jessica Parker joked that she was keeping her descriptions 'vague' on purpose because 'I'm trying to set very low standards!' Parker, who plays Carrie, revealed: 'This time around, Carrie has been married for a couple of years. She is about to publish her fourth book. 'She is content. ... She and her husband, John, have found a nice and modest apartment, and they are living their lives, and she is seeing her friends as much as time allows. She added: 'Charlotte is still married to Harry. She is comfortable with the name Goldenblatt.' Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte, added: 'Yes, I am. I have two children now. Movie review: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ soars - La Crosse Tribune

What a refreshing change "How to Train Your Dragon" brings to the cartoon world: The creatures are not all that cute, and they do not speak a word.

DreamWorks Animation has been at the head of the pack for adorable, fast-talking critters with such movies as "Over the Hedge," "Kung Fu Panda" and the "Madagascar" series.

With "How to Train Your Dragon," the filmmakers tone down the glib factor and tell a pretty good action yarn, a boy-and-his-dragon story filled with fiery Viking battles, swordplay and dazzling aerial imagery aboard the flying reptiles.

For young children, the movie may not rate as high on the laugh and sight-gag meter as some of those earlier, more slapstick-y DreamWorks tales. After a slow, rather droning start, though, "How to Train Your Dragon" takes off on an exhilarating ride through the ancient Norse world, the hardscrabble landscape also a pleasant change from the softer realms of other cartoons.

Based on Cressida Cowell's children's book, the movie follows the adventures of Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), the scrawny, misfit son of Viking chief and master dragon-slayer Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler).

A disappointment to his dad and a joke to his community, Hiccup is determined to make up for his lack of brawn by using his wits to bring down a Night Fury, the fiercest breed among the dragons that besiege his island village.

He actually succeeds, but finds he lacks the hard heart it takes to finish off the dragon. Instead, Hiccup feeds and nurses the wounded dragon, which he names Toothless.

A shrewd observer, Hiccup picks up on the finer points of dragon behavior from his new pet, which he applies to his dragon-slaying lessons run by blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson).

With his skills as a dragon whisperer, Hiccup becomes a local hero among the villagers and a rival for fierce classmate Astrid (America Ferrera).

Inevitably, Hiccup must prove his worth in battle, banding with his fellow trainees in an assault against a colossal dragon that would send a T-Rex scurrying for cover.

The voice work among the cast is a bit uneven, Baruchel's nasally monotone threatening to whine the movie to death early on.

DreamWorks has gotten good mileage out of a Scottish accent in the "Shrek" movies, so the filmmakers let Scotsmen Butler and Ferguson go to town with boisterous brogues that liven up the dialogue. But their voices also beg the question, why do the adults speak in Scottish accents and the youths in American ones? No biggie, just wondering.

In Cowell's book, the dragons also spoke in their own language. The filmmakers, including writer-directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois ("Lilo & Stitch"), wisely dispense with the talking reptiles.

"How to Train Your Dragon" really soars in the visual department, the animators presenting a 3-D world of bleak, mythical beauty in the island's crags and mists. Some of the flying scenes are gorgeous, Toothless the dragon hovering above pillowy clouds against a shimmering night sky.

And to clarify an earlier point: While these dragons are not all that cute, Toothless, like any faithful pet, proves utterly endearing by the end.

James "Bubba" Cromer said the mix-up defamed him and caused emotional distress, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles. He accuses HBO and Showtime of negligence and is seeking unspecified damages.

How the legal action came about is its own Hollywood story.

It started as Cromer and his father surfed the TV listings on March 1 as they waited for his mother to finish her bridge game. The Columbia lawyer saw The Hills Have Thighs was set to make its television debut on The Movie Channel, which is owned by Showtime. He said the listing included the description of his movie and the names of its actors.

It was the first Cromer had heard about it, but he had recently hired a talent agent to promote his work. And the 1:30 a.m. premiere was just hours away. So he called the cast of the film, his friends and family to tell them to set their digital recorders. He wrote to his more than 4,000 friends on Facebook: "The Hills Have Thighs is on The Movie Channel all month!!!"

Cromer said he stayed up late even though he had to be in court at 8:30 a.m. and in the South Carolina House a few hours later, where he serves as reading clerk. Before the movie came on, Cromer said he heard a voiceover: "Bubba Cromer later tonight does it again with his second feature film The Hills Have Thighs. Deliverance in reverse."

"All my words," Cromer told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I got on my floor and I crossed myself because that was a dream come true."

Then the appointed hour arrived, with a surprising plot twist: "I saw a set of thighs and realized instantly that wasn't my movie."

Instead of his "hysterical Appalachian comedy," it showed the film directed by Jim Wynorski, a longtime cult favorite and director of exploitation films with plenty of skin and risque turns on popular movie titles, such as the The Da Vinci Coed and The Witches of Breastwick.

The plot is pretty straightforward for its genre, according to its current Showtime listing: "A group searches the desert for a missing friend but instead find a trio of crazed, sex-starved mutant women."

Cromer said he spent a long, sleepless night answering phone calls, e-mails and text messages. Some were from Cromer's colleagues in the House, whom he had told to watch. Several rebuked him, asking if he had lost his mind and accusing him of embarrassing the chamber.

"It's been the most disturbing and frightening thing that has happened to me," Cromer said.

Cromer said the movie also showed later in the month with the wrong listing on Cinemax, which is owned by HBO, though HBO disputes that.

HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson said all references on Cinemax were to Wynorski's film, not Cromer's. Officials at Showtime didn't immediately responded to a message seeking comment.

Cromer, a 46-year-old attorney, spent the first couple of years of his law career in Los Angeles with a writing sample under his arm, then got homesick and came back home to South Carolina. He was the first independent elected to the South Carolina House since Reconstruction. He stepped aside after eight years to become the chamber's reading clerk.

But there was another itch he needed to scratch. So he made a fictional documentary called The Long Way Home: A Bigfoot Story and a year later he directed his second film, The Hills Have Thighs, financing the movie himself.

The film's website said it is the story of the disappearance of "a local hillbilly icon named Daniel Boone Owen, who vanishes one night after a corn liquor-induced stupor." It pokes fun at Appalachian stereotypes, including the invasion of "limousine liberals" from outside the state.

Cromer has not spoken with the makers of the 2010 version of The Hills Have Thighs. He referred questions about why he didn't sue the people involved with the other film to his lawyer, Patricia Millett, who didn't immediately respond to a message.

A phone listing for Wynorski was not immediately found and he did not immediately respond to messages left on his Facebook and MySpace pages.

The agitation in Cromer's voice was evident as he talked about the lawsuit Tuesday.

"Associating my name with pornography is the last thing I would ever do," Cromer said. "That's just nuts. I could care less about marketing. I want my name back."

Movie review: Playwright Conor McPherson brings his ghosts to the screen in `The Eclipse' - Washington Examiner

In "The Eclipse," the acclaimed Irish playwright Conor McPherson has crafted a film every bit as affecting and haunting as his plays.

It's a small, humble gem of a movie that in less than 1 1/2 hours proves McPherson's talents for character and atmosphere fit the screen as much as they do the stage.

The 38-year-old playwright of "The Weir" and "The Seafarer" has trafficked in movies before. He directed "Saltwater" (2000) and "The Actors" (2003), both little-seen and poorly reviewed. McPherson has said "The Eclipse" — which more thoroughly bears his imprint — is for all intents and purposes his first proper film.

It stars Ciaran Hinds ("There Will Be Blood," HBO's "Rome") as Michael Farr, a father of a 14-year-old and a 10-year-old. Widowed for two years by his wife's death from cancer, he has continued a quiet life as a woodworking teacher in the Irish coastal city of Cobh.

During "The Eclipse," he is also volunteering at the city's annual literary festival, driving around a visiting writer of ghost stories, Lena Morelle (Iben Hjejle). Michael, himself, is haunted. He sees realistic, horrifying visions, including a premonition of his father-in-law's death.

Lena, a soulful writer from London (her book is the film's title), is badgered by a former fling, best-selling novelist Nicholas Holden (Aidan Quinn). Quinn plays the character expertly: A liar, drunk and adulterer, Nicholas is brashly arrogant but so insecure that he challenges Michael — whom he sees as a threat to his pursuit of Lena — to a late-night boxing match.

Michael bonds with Lena, someone who understands his visions. Hinds, a gifted actor who's clearly capable of being a leading man more frequently, was deservedly named best actor for his performance at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. He has a resonating gravity as Michael, a gentle man trying — and failing — to hide the weight of his demons.

McPherson has made the supernatural something of a trademark. "The Eclipse" is adapted from a short story by the playwright Billy Roche, with whom McPherson co-wrote the script. One of McPherson's biggest changes was turning Michael into a widower, not unlike the protagonist of his play "Shining City," who was also a ghost-seeing widower, played by Hinds on Broadway.

It's a key revision. Grief hangs over Michael and his visions are directly related to his wife's memory — he's terrified of forgetting her. They come like eruptions, jolting Michael — as well as the audience. The sudden appearances of these ghosts — very much in the flesh — are played like horror-movie frights, complete with shrieking music.

What's curious about the supernatural elements of "The Eclipse" is that their appearances feel more like ugly cameos of reality: In McPherson's world, life is the dream from which the ghosts wake you. The misty shore of Cobh, a quiet cigarette in the dark — these moments are no less "real" than Michael's supernatural visits.

Healing is at the heart of "The Eclipse." Warm choral music, arranged by McPherson and composer Fionnuala Ni Chiosain, creeps over the film, promising brighter days.

By the final, frozen image of "The Eclipse" — an unburdened Michael strolling down the beach with his dog — it's clear what the film means: that grief can haunt like a ghost, and that it passes.

"The Eclipse," a Magnolia Pictures release, is rated R for language and some disturbing images. Running time: 88 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Predators stars Starring Adrien Brody and Alice Braga, who are joined by Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, and Laurence Fishburne among others. The film hits theaters this Summer with a scheduled July 7th release.

Film Synopsis - A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez's creative auspices at the filmmaker's Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

Tom Hanks and his production partner Gary Goetzman want to turn Green Day's "American Idiot" album into a new movie.

The concept album has already been turned into a hit stage musical and now Hanks and his Playtone partner want to put it on the big screen, according to Internet reports.

Playtone was the company behind hit Abba musical "Mamma Mia!"

The "American Idiot" stage show opens at the St. James Theatre on Broadway later this week after scoring sell outs and success in California.

Popeye movie coming in 3-D - Edmonton Journal

Popeye's famously massive forearms will bulge larger than ever when the squinty-eyed sailor makes his return to the big screen in 3-D.

Variety magazine reported Tuesday that a deal has been reached to release a new animated movie starring the flinty seaman, his longtime love interest Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto and adopted child Swee'Pea. No date has been announced for the movie's release.

The film will be made by Sony Pictures Animation with its Image-Works division handling the computer graphics.

Popeye was last seen on the big screen in 1980 when comedian Robin Williams starred in a live-action version directed by Robert Altman.

Created by E.C. Segar, the animated character Popeye first appeared in the already established Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929. Introduced as a walk-on character, Popeye eventually became the strip's star.

In each episode of the cartoon, the iconic sailor invariably succeeds in getting himself or his associates out of a jam, but only after consuming a can of spinach, which magically gives him herculean strength.

Scottish actor EWAN MCGREGOR has landed the lead role in MADONNA's movie about late British royal KING EDWARD VIII, according to reports.

The Material Girl is stepping behind the camera for a second time to direct a historical drama based on the former King, who abdicated in 1936 so he could marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson.

And the Trainspotting actor is set to play Edward in the upcoming movie, reports Screen Daily.

McGregor will join Vera Farmiga, who is slated to play Simpson, as well as Abbie Cornish, who has also been linked to the project.

Madonna made her directorial debut in 2008 with Filth and Wisdom, which was panned by critics.

"Alice in Wonderland" doesn't have to worry this weekend about getting taken down by a "Bounty Hunter," "Repo Men" or a "Wimpy Kid."

Walt Disney Studios' 3-D blockbuster "Alice" is sure to top the box-office charts for the third consecutive weekend, while a quartet of movies opening in wide release all jockey for position behind it.

After its huge, $116-million debut in the U.S. and Canada, director Tim Burton's "Alice" declined a relatively modest 46% on its second weekend to $62 million. It should fall a bit less on its third weekend, which would put ticket sales at around $35 million and possibly as much as $40 million.

So far "Alice" has racked up more than $221 million domestically and about the same amount overseas.
Sony Pictures' romantic comedy "Bounty Hunter," which stars Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, has the best prospects among the new pictures. (Correction, 3:25 p.m.: An earlier version of this post incorrectly said that Jennifer Garner stars in "Bounty Hunter.")

Despite its genre, the movie is generating nearly as much interest among men as women, according to people who have seen pre-release audience polling. Some of the movie's ads have focused on its action and broad comedy elements in order to lure more males. The picture, which Sony and Relativity Media financed at a cost of $40 million to $50 million, should open to around $20 million.

Science-fiction action flick "Repo Men," meanwhile, is on track to open closer to about $15 million. Relativity Media also co-financed this movie, which co-stars Jude Law and Forrest Whitaker, this time with distributor Universal Pictures. The movie cost $32 million and has been awaiting a release date for about two years — an unusually long time -- since production was completed.

In a bid to draw sci-fi fans and tie into the film's man-on-the-run theme, Universal has promoted the movie through a game in which players get clues online and seek out four real people attempting to avoid detection for a month.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid," based on the popular series of children's books and comics, faces a big challenge in competing for the family audience with the continued popularity of "Alice." The modestly budgeted picture cost 20th Century Fox's movie label Fox 2000 only about $15 million to produce, so a predicted opening of about $10 million should be respectable.

Director Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" starts expanding nationwide this weekend after generating a healthy $4.6 million over the last four weeks in limited release. The political drama, which co-stars Ewan MacGregor and Pierce Brosnan, is playing at 819 theaters and is likely to take in closer to $5 million.

Also debuting this weekend is "The Runaways," based on the band of the same name led by Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Independent distributor Apparition is launching the movie at 244 theaters in 10 cities, a larger-than-normal start for a film in limited release, before taking it nationwide next week.

"The Runaways" will undoubtedly draw some young female moviegoers thanks to the lead roles played by "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Focus Features opens its Noah Baumbach-directed drama "Greenberg," starring Ben Stiller, at one theater in Los Angeles and two in New York City this weekend.

TINA FEY hopes LINDSAY LOHAN will make a triumphant return to the big scr een following a string of box-office flops - because she showed such pote ntial as a teenager filming MEAN GIRLS.
Fey wrote and starred in the 2004 movie, in which Lohan played a naive school girl who becomes part of a ruthless girl gang.
The 30 Rock star was convinced the 23 year old was destined for a stell ar movie career and was devastated to watch the actress' personal problem s overshadow her professional life.
Lohan, who has endured a string of legal problems and stints in rehab, went on to appear in a string of critically-panned films, including 2007' s Georgia Rule and thriller I Know Who Killed Me.
But Fey is confident the former child star can turn her career around.
She says, "Lindsay was 17 when she did (Mean Girls) and she was brillia nt. But to have success and money at that age has got to be overwhelming.
No one tells you 'No', and I definitely wouldn=E2=80=99t want that for m y child.

Movie review: `How to Train Your Dragon' flies high ... - Washington Examiner

What a refreshing change "How to Train Your Dragon" brings to the cartoon world: The creatures are not all that cute, and they do not speak a word.

DreamWorks Animation has been at the head of the pack for adorable, fast-talking critters with such movies as "Over the Hedge," "Kung Fu Panda" and the "Madagascar" series.

For small children, the movie may not rate as high on the laugh and sight-gag meter as some of those earlier, more slapstick-y DreamWorks tales. After a slow, rather droning start, though, "How to Train Your Dragon" takes off on an exhilarating ride through the ancient Norse world, the hardscrabble landscape also a pleasant change from the softer realms of other cartoons.

He actually succeeds, but finds he lacks the hard heart it takes to finish off the dragon. Instead, Hiccup feeds and nurses the wounded dragon, which he names Toothless.

A shrewd observer, Hiccup picks up on the finer points of dragon behavior from his new pet, which he applies to his dragon-slaying lessons run by blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson).

With his skills as a dragon whisperer, Hiccup becomes a local hero among the villagers and a rival for fierce classmate Astrid (America Ferrera).

Inevitably, Hiccup must prove his worth in battle, banding with his fellow trainees (played by a voice cast that includes Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) in an assault against a colossal dragon that would send a T-Rex scurrying for cover.

The voice work among the cast is a bit uneven, Baruchel's nasally monotone threatening to whine the movie to death early on.

In Cowell's book, the dragons also spoke in their own language. The filmmakers, including writer-directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois ("Lilo & Stitch"), wisely dispense with the talking reptiles.

The creatures are more fierce and mysterious in attack mode — and more comical when they fall under Hiccup's spell — without opening their yaps to chew the fat.

And to clarify an earlier point: While these dragons are not all that cute, Toothless, like any faithful pet, proves utterly endearing by the end.

"How to Train Your Dragon," a DreamWorks Animation release distributed by Paramount, is rated PG for sequences of intense action and some scary images, and brief mild language. Running time: 98 minutes. Three stars out of four.

It'll cost you $618,000 and, if you miss one of your "easy" payments, you'll find yourself hounded by a hired goon who will slice you open, retrieve the organ and leave you bleeding to death. But at least you enjoyed a little extra time with your loved ones, right?

With any luck, that time wouldn't be spent watching empty-headed thrillers like "Repo Men," a trashy movie that offers its slick dystopian vision as a pretense to lacerate a few dozen bodies in a fashion that makes "Nip/Tuck" look like "Marcus Welby, M.D."

The movie's plot thickens after an on-the-job accident forces Jude Law's repo man to have a literal change of heart about his career. The hunter becomes the hunted, and the movie trades its meager social satire for buckets of blood, but not improving a lick in the process.

The movie is rated R and is 111 minutes long.

Blockbuster now Movie House owned by Port Angeles couple - Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES -- The Blockbuster Video closed and reopened just a few days later as the Movie House -- owned and operated by a Port Angeles couple.

Steven Hoyt started at Blockbuster when it opened in 2003 as an assistant manager and was promoted shortly thereafter to manager.

The Blockbuster franchise was owned by Clay Bohms and Associates in Bellevue, which decided about a year and a half ago that it was too expensive to run long-distance, Hoyt said.

"They had other businesses that were booming, and this was really the only Blockbuster they were doing," he said.

"So they suggested that I might buy them out and be the owner."

The Blockbuster closed Jan. 31 and reopened Feb. 5 as the Movie House.

Hoyt signed papers last week to be the new official owner.

First the group looked into Hoyt running it as a Blockbuster, but he didn't qualify to be a franchise owner, he said.

"So I thought, 'Why not be independent, do your own thing, and not have to pay some corporation a chunk of your revenue every year to be able to put their name on the front?'" he said.

So he and his wife, Donna, decided to run it as an independent operation.

"I have been running this since 2004, basically, and I know what I'm doing," he said.

"In some ways, this is even better than before because now we can look things up a lot faster instead of having to call the vendor about when things are coming in.

"Everything else will stay about the same -- so it will be the same and a little better for customers."

Hoyt said he is confident the business will survive independently.

"For our current customers, it was practically a seamless transition," he said.

"And for others, a lot of people really like to support the hometown businesses rather than the big corporations, so I think this will be a good move."

He said roughly half of the customers use the monthly movie pass, a feature that has carried over into the new business.

The pass allows customers to keep one movie at a time out for $15 per month, two at a time for $25 and three at a time for $30.

The pass allows the customer to make unlimited checkouts and returns.

"That is a really popular feature," he said.

Hoyt said he can't imagine a better job than owning his own movie store.

"I'm just a huge movie fan," he said.

"I love the customer service."

Amish Grace – Tonight on Lifetime Movie Network - Christian Post

If a murderer walked into an elementary school and slaughtered five local girls and wounded five others, how would you respond? How do you forgive the unforgivable?

Amish Grace, premiering tonight on the Lifetime Movie Network, dramatizes the true story of the unthinkable murders at an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania in 1996. Charlie Roberts, a man tortured by the death of his newborn daughter, decided to take out his anger toward God on ten innocent schoolgirls, after which he took his own life. Amish Grace, in a show of restraint notable by contemporary standards, does not wallow in the lurid details, but focuses instead on the aftermath, and how a people of faith respond in the face of terrible evil.

By now, everyone knows the story; how the Amish community extended forgiveness to Charlie Roberts and sought to comfort the family of his widow Amy (Tammy Blanchard, the star of Bella). It is tempting to think of the Amish as unreal - people from a postcard past of rural America. We think we know the Amish. They dress differently, do not use electricity, they adhere to a strict faith, and shun those who leave their ranks. And they forgive. But instead of treating the Amish as one-dimensional caricatures, director Gregg Champion shows us individual Amish families struggling with their loss in often heartbreaking ways.

It would be wrong to reveal too much of the plot, but Amish Grace does not candy-coat the cost of forgiveness - there is no cheap grace here - nor does it hide the real pain these families experienced. Both the parents of the slain children (notably Kimberly Williams-Paisley who plays Ida Graber) and the widow of the man who took their lives must deal with the betrayal, anger, unfathomable loss, and questions about how one can believe in a good God in the midst of a sometimes dark and evil world.

As we approach Easter, and consider the cost God paid to forgive us of our sins, Amish Grace is a timely tale. My only regret concerning Amish Grace is the same one I had concerning The Blind Side: that true forgiveness, like faith, is so unusual in our world that it merits a movie. It is a "man bites dog" story. My hope is that Amish Grace will inspire more people to live their faith out loud so that such acts will be considered commonplace among Christians, instead of a curiosity.

Amish Grace premieres tonight on the Lifetime Movie Network at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific.

It is so hard to do a movie like this well. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is a PG-rated comedy about the hero's first year of middle school, and it's nimble, bright and funny.

It doesn't dumb down. It doesn't patronize. It knows something about human nature. It isn't as good as "A Christmas Story," as few movies are, but it deserves a place in the same sentence.

Here is a family movie you don't need a family to enjoy. You must, however, have been a wimpy kid. Most kids are wimpy in their secret hearts. Those that never were grow up to be cage fighters.

Greg Heffley isn't the shortest student in his class. That would be Chirag Gupta. Greg (Zachary Gordon) is only the second shortest. He's at that crucial age when everybody else has started to grow. There's a funny slideshow illustrating how his class looked in sixth grade, and how they look now — some with mustaches. The girls, of course, are taller than the boys.

The onset of adolescence is an awkward age, made marginally easier for Greg because he still hasn't developed an interest in girls. Even his best friend, Rowley (Robert Capron), is flattered to be noticed by a girl, and Rowley is so out of it he thinks that at his age kids still "play," when, as we all know, they "hang."

The girl who notices Greg and Rowley is Angie (Chloe Moretz), who seems wise beyond her years. We first see her under the bleachers, reading "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg. Keep your eye on her in high school. She looks way older than her two new friends, but I checked, and Moretz was only 12 when she made the movie.

In middle school we find cliques, cruelty and bullying. The pack is poised to pounce.

"Diary" is especially funny about a slice of Swiss cheese that was dropped on a playground sometime in the distant past, and has grown an alarming coating of mold. Some kid poked it once, and all the other kids avoided him like the plague. He had the dreaded Cheese Touch. He only got rid of it by touching another kid. Then that kid had the Touch, until ... and so on.

The cheese nicely symbolizes the hunger kids have for an excuse, any excuse, to make other kids pariahs. Remember what happened to anyone who wore green on a Thursday?

Where do they find these actors? They come up on TV, I guess. Chloe Moretz has been acting since she was 7. Zachary Gordon has the confidence and timing of an old pro; he plays wimpy as if it's a desirable character trait. Robert Capron, as the pudgy Rowley, pulls off the tricky feat of being an inch or two taller than Greg and yet still childish; wait until you see his Halloween costume.

Greg's parents (Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn) aren't major characters because what happens in school consumes all of Greg's psychic energy. His older brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick), is, of course, a sadistic teaser who makes life miserable. But at that age, so it goes.

The movie is inspired by the books of Jeff Kinney, and the titles reproduce his hand-lettering and drawing style. The movie reproduces his charm.

The movie version of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" manages to put flesh and bone on the stick figures in Jeff Kinney's wildly successful cartoon novel without altering the book's mildly subversive comic tone.

That fidelity plays mostly for the good, though the book's moron-plagued, middle-school protagonist ---- a sixth-grade boy, who, let's be honest, comes off as kind of self-absorbed, lazy and petty ---- loses some of his appeal when viewed under the harsh light of the camera.

What's funny on the page is less sympathetic on the screen, meaning the wimpy kid who's going to win the hearts and minds of most moviegoers is not the title character, but his best buddy, the I-gotta-be-me super-nerd Rowley.

Unlike Rowley, Greg (Zachary Gordon) is obsessed with being one of the cool kids as he enters the "glorified holding pen" known as middle school. Greg covets immediate status among his peers, but doesn't want to put in any actual work to win that recognition.

So he tries out various activities, which he sees as "rackets," in an effort to move up the popularity scale at his school. Best friend Rowley (Robert Capron), meanwhile, shows up on the first day of class wearing a serape and sporting a bowl haircut.

Then, after school, Rowley shouts across the courtyard, "Hey, Greg! Wanna play?", breaching middle school etiquette by failing to use the proper, codified language (it's "hang out," not "play") and for displaying undue enthusiasm.

Greg begins to believe that he's either going to have to remake Rowley or lose him as a friend altogether. What Greg doesn't understand is that Rowley, with his passion for self-expression, has an authenticity that will eventually win the kind of acceptance Greg so desperately desires.

Which brings us to the movie's main problem: The Wimpy Kid is a wet blanket. True, that's always been the conceit behind Kinney's series, at four books and counting. Being 12 is an awkward, imperfect, in-between time. Few people remember middle school fondly.

But in transferring the clean, precise humor of Kinney's illustrations and prose to the big-screen, the material loses just a bit of its charm. All the highlights from the first book have been kept ---- the moldy mysterious cheese lying on the basketball court (you don't want The Cheese Touch!), the Zoo-Wee Mama comic creation, the Halloween night trick-or-treating misadventures ---- and they're presented in the same episodic structure.

Director Thor Freudenthal and two teams of screenwriters have also shoehorned in a girl, a too-cool-for-school seventh-grader named Angie (Chloe Grace Moretz), attempting, one supposes, to broaden the material's appeal. The effect is negligible.

"Wimpy Kid" remains very much a story about boys taking their first tentative steps toward becoming men. It's a journey fraught with embarrassment and small-mindedness. If you're lucky, the movie suggests, you might have a friend like Rowley to help you get by.

Mel Gibson and Bill Monahan, the screenwriter behind The Departed, are currently hammering away on what might be Gibson's last film ever: a Viking epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

"I saw it in my mind back when I was teenager. Seriously, it's the first movie I wanted to make. And I think it will be the last film I direct. It's the thing I have been going toward, in a way, since I was young, and I think when it's done I may be finished."

Gibson cited the need for a Viking movie because "it's something the audience hasn't seen in a long time." Over 50 years have passed since Kirk Douglas's The Vikings, and apparently The Thirteenth Warrior doesn't count because, well, it starred Antonio Banderas.

People close to Gibson brushed off the suggestion that this film would be his last. He's probably just taking a page from Brett Favre's playbook to make sure the film is extra, extra epic. Viking epic.

Movie review: Repo Men, starring Jude Law and Forest ... - Baltimore Sun

Plenty of interior body parts are forcibly removed from reluctant humans in the violent futuristic action film "Repo Men": kidneys, hearts, livers, all high-tech and artificial, and in the movie's cautionary premise, rented to the medically needy at usury-friendly rates by a nasty corporation called The Union. But there's a key organ missing from the movie itself: a brain. In its place is a memory bank of other, better movies.

That's a shame because creeping around the edges of "Repo Men" is the potential for a funky and prescient piece of gory dystopian satire. For starters, it's got three game male leads: Jude Law as one of the titular enforcers, Remy, a blue-collar Everyhunk whose task — if you're a customer overdue on payments — is to slit you up and retrieve that expensive biomedical breakthrough inside that you thought was prolonging your life; Forest Whitaker as his prankish colleague, who'd love nothing more than to be a repo forever; and Liev Schreiber as their oily, always-be-closing boss, The Union's top salesman.

When Remy, estranged from his wife (a scowling Carice Van Houten) and kid, gets hurt on the job and wakes up sporting his own pricey Union ticker and a crushing debt, he experiences — wink, wink — a change of heart about his mean, bloody job. Knowing what the day of collecting means, Remy and a nightclub singer (Alice Braga) with a hot bod of black market parts decide they must fight to foreclose on the system instead.

But where screenwriters Eric Garcia (adapting his own novel) and Garrett Lerner start off with a nifty sci-fi hybrid of headline-conscious concerns about where subprime blues, biotechnology and unconscionable health care are taking us, they and director Miguel Sapochnik would ultimately rather sell you a loud and ludicrous tour of genre references. It starts with John Cleese's "Can we have your liver then?" from "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life" and barrels through "Blade Runner" (production design), "Logan's Run" (fugitive scenario), "Coma" (all-white room reveal), "Brazil" (everything) and Cronenberg's "Crash" (don't ask).

It takes a more skillful hand than Sapochnik's to mix cinematic homage, thrills and thematic fluidity — think "Minority Report" or "Children of Men" — which leaves "Repo Men" feeling like its own desperate case of debt obligation.

London, Mar 20 : Janet Jackson channelled her dormant anger over her beloved brother Michael's death into a furious scene in her new film.

For the scene in Tyler Perry''s new movie' Why Did I Get Married Too?', Janet had to smash up furniture with a golf club.

The singer-cum-actress reprises her role as a psychotherapist in the sequel to the 2007 movie 'Why Did I Get Married?'

And Janet has admitted that she found the emotional scene therapeutic after a tough 2009, which saw her split from longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri and loss of the King of Pop.

"You have to dig deep but there was some stuff that was right there for me. Stuff that had just happened, with my brother passing, and also relationships, experiencing exactly that," the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

Michael passed away after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest in June (09).

NEW YORK -- In a move that may rewrite the playbook for distributing and promoting film-related products, retail goliath Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is assuming exclusive rights to sell toys and other gear for DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.'s upcoming release, "How to Train Your Dragon," at its 3,600 U.S. stores.

While it's not uncommon for Wal-Mart to have worked directly with studios on product ideas and exclusive pacts in the past, the deal was the first of its kind in that the two parties came together more than a year ago to talk about toys and other products, package design and parallel marketing.

That will include Wal-Mart creating two commercials and placing 2,500 Viking ships in its stores, company spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said in an interview. The film is due out Friday, but some of the products already are in stores.

About 95 percent of merchandise tied to the movie will be available only at Wal-Mart, with the exclusivity pact lasting through 2011. Toys "R" Us, for instance, will be selling video games and books tied to the movie, spokeswoman Jennifer Albano said. She said the toy retailer has done exclusive toy deals on movies such as "Bolt" and "Ice Age 3" at its stores at the time of the movies' releases.

Wal-Mart "has been and continues to be perceived as the price leader," BMO Capital Markets analyst Wayne Hood, who rates Wal-Mart as market perform, said in an interview. "The opportunity for Wal-Mart going forward is from being a low-price food retailer to a company that's also known for innovation. It's very important. Here Wal-Mart takes it to another level. It's a good move."

Getting budget-conscious shoppers to spend on items other than food is critical for Wal-Mart, which generates about 13 percent to 14 percent of its more than $400 billion in sales from the entertainment division. Including toys and electronics, it is the retailer's second-largest division by sales after food, Hood said. The company's Wal-Mart stores in the U.S. have seen comparable sales decline for three straight quarters.

In the past, Wal-Mart might have waited for suppliers to approach with products that it then buys for its stores, but the company played an active role in this deal. It invited private toy maker Spin Master to make products tied to the movie, O'Brien said.

"This is more than an exclusive deal," O'Brien said. "It's more like launching a brand. We were engaged in the whole process. It's about bringing cinema to retail."

Wal-Mart will consider working directly with movie studios in the future for similar product promotions, she said.

"It's about launching a platform as much as launching an exclusive line of products," said Needham & Co. analyst Sean McGowan, adding other studios and retailers will follow if it proves to be successful.

Analysts said toymakers such as Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc., who usually sign deals directly with movie studios, also may need to rethink how they approach these types of deals and their retailer customers.

The deal with DreamWorks came after Wal-Mart's exclusive deals with music artists such as AC/DC and Kiss to sell their albums exclusively in its stores. Retailers also have wanted more control in carrying products, including packaging that they can better display in stores.

Exclusive deals have become a key strategy of how retailers and brand companies seek to differentiate themselves and guarantee products a certain shelf space, especially at a marquee retailer such as Wal-Mart, the largest U.S. toy retailer, analysts have said. Indeed, DreamWorks approached Wal-Mart on this deal, O'Brien said.

"If you want distribution of your products, what better place you can think of than Wal-Mart?" said BMO's Hood.

Manufacturers, including food and beverage companies Kellogg Co. and PepsiCo Inc., also worked directly with Wal-Mart and DreamWorks to make licensed toys, apparel and snacks tied to the movie, about a Viking teenager who trains a dragon.

Also for the first time, Wal-Mart said it has developed an activity book tied to the movie to be featured in Happy Meals only at all 1,000 McDonald's Corp. stores inside Wal-Mart stores.

Wal-Mart said it will begin an active advertising program including broadcast, print and commercials on more than 13,000 screens in 4,600 movie theaters to bring shoppers to stores.

Next week, it will place a 40-foot Viking ship in New York's Times Square. While Wal-Mart doesn't have a store in cities such as New York, O'Brien said New York is one of the company's biggest markets online.

The opening shot of The Runaways is of a drop of menstrual blood hitting the pavement. The message is plain: this is a movie about girls, told from a girl's point of view. Throughout the film, which chronicles the rise and implosion of the 1970s all-girl rock band, director Floria Sigismondi reinforces the female sensibility with a studied, matter-of-fact presentation of masturbation, lesbianism, and bodily functions. Men, when they appear at all, are disappointing, like singer Cherie Currie's (Dakota Fanning) alcoholic father; creepy and controlling, like the band's manager, Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon); or expendable, like the band's roadie and Cherie's occasional sex partner, who disappears after a handful of scenes.

You can't tell the story of the Runaways without acknowledging the way Fowley, a lecherous self-promoter, traded on the girls' jailbait appeal to sell records. But in depicting the degradations and objectifications the girls submit to on the way to their 15 minutes of top-40 fame, Sigismondi raises the question: how do you make a film about female exploitation that is not itself exploitational?

This live-action adaptation of Jeff Kinney's illustrated novel centers on a wisecracking junior high school student and his adventures at school as well as his relationship with his family.

Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) relates to us with his voiceover-thoughts, as he is about to start middle school. His mom, who wanted to get him a journal, had to settle for a diary, much to Greg's dismay. Greg aptly describes his trials and tribulations of school including the morons, bullies, and having to eat his lunch on the cafeteria floor. As a counter to the misfortunes of school, and attain the social school status he feels he deserves, he constantly dreams up elaborate plans, which of course, backfire.

The key line in Greg's 'diary' sums up his feeling on middle school, "One day when I'm famous, I'll have better things to do than answer peoples' stupid questions all day."

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" brings right up front, roll into one story, the various aspects that a child going into middle school, might be face with. Its an entertaining, exaggerated, and over the top in a lot of instances but it does convey the overall ordeal children may face. The standout performance for me is the young actor Robert Capron who stars as Greg's best friend!

Starring Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn, Connor Fielding, Owen Fielding, Devon Bostick, and Chloe Moretz.

Directed by Thor Freudenthal. Written by Jackie Filgo and Jeff Filgo. Fox 2000 Pictures release. Rated PG.

NEW YORK (AP) --- The movie version of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" manages to put flesh and bone on the stick figures in Jeff Kinney's wildly successful cartoon novel without altering the book's mildly subversive comic tone.

That fidelity plays mostly for the good, though the book's moron-plagued, middle-school protagonist — a sixth-grade boy, who, let's be honest, comes off as kind of self-absorbed, lazy and petty — loses some of his appeal when viewed under the harsh light of the camera.

What's funny on the page is less sympathetic on the screen, meaning the wimpy kid who's going to win the hearts and minds of most moviegoers is not the title character, but his best buddy, the I-gotta-be-me super-nerd Rowley.

Unlike Rowley, Greg (Zachary Gordon) is obsessed with being one of the cool kids as he enters the "glorified holding pen" known as middle school. Greg covets immediate status among his peers, but doesn't want to put in any actual work to win that recognition.

So he tries out various activities, which he sees as "rackets," in an effort to move up the popularity scale at his school. Best friend Rowley (Robert Capron), meanwhile, shows up on the first day of class wearing a serape and sporting a bowl haircut.

Then, after school, Rowley shouts across the courtyard, "Hey, Greg! Wanna play?", breaching middle school etiquette by failing to use the proper, codified language (it's "hang out," not "play") and for displaying undue enthusiasm.

Greg begins to believe that he's either going to have to remake Rowley or lose him as a friend altogether. What Greg doesn't understand is that Rowley, with his passion for self-expression, has an authenticity that will eventually win the kind of acceptance Greg so desperately desires.

Which brings us to the movie's main problem: The Wimpy Kid is a wet blanket. True, that's always been the conceit behind Kinney's series, currently at four books and counting. Being 12 is an awkward, imperfect, in-between time. Few people remember middle school fondly.

But in transferring the clean, precise humor of Kinney's illustrations and prose to the big-screen, the material loses just a bit of its charm. All the highlights from the first book have been kept — the moldy mysterious cheese lying on the basketball court (you don't want The Cheese Touch!), the Zoo-Wee Mama comic creation, the Halloween night trick-or-treating misadventures — and they're presented in the same episodic structure.

Director Thor Freudenthal and two teams of screenwriters have also shoehorned in a girl, a too-cool-for-school seventh-grader named Angie (Chloe Grace Moretz), attempting, one supposes, to broaden the material's appeal. The effect is negligible.

"Wimpy Kid" remains very much a story about boys taking their first tentative steps toward becoming men. It's a journey fraught with embarrassment and small-mindedness. If you're lucky, the movie suggests, you might have a friend like Rowley to help you get by.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG for some rude humor and language. Running time: 91 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Hank Azaria to Voice Gargamel in "The Smurfs" Movie - WorstPreviews.com

Entertainment Weekly has learned that Hank Azaria ("The Simpsons," Night at the Museum) has joined the cast of the upcoming live-action/CG "The Smurfs" movie. He will voice Gargamel, the evil sorcerer and arch-nemesis of the Smurfs.

In addition, EW has also learned that "Glee" star Emma Pillsbury has also been cast as the pregnant wife of Neil Patrick Harris' live-action character.

The rest of the voice cast includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette and Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf. It also rumored that Quentin Tarantino will voice Brainy Smurf.

Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Scooby-Doo) is directing the new 3D movie which is set to go in front of the cameras in April and scheduled to hit theaters on July 29th, 2011.

Robert Pattinson sent teenage girls into pandemonium at the UK premiere of his latest movie in London on Wednesday night.

The British actor was greeted by thousands of screaming fans in Leicester Square as he stepped out on the red carpet to promote Remember Me, in which he plays a tormented man who falls in love after suffering a family tragedy.

The heartthrob spent over an hour chatting to fans and signing autographs with his co-star and love interest in the movie, Emilie de Ravin, and admitted he still can't believe how popular he has become since being catapulted to fame by his role as vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I'm feeling really, really good, I'm so happy to be here tonight and to meet everyone... I never go to places where crowds congregate, so it's always a novelty. It's a completely separate aspect of my life. It's nice."

Robert, 23, also revealed his female admirers followed him everywhere while he was shooting Remember Me and he had to rely on the support of the cast to stop him from being mobbed everyday.

He said: "Everyone was so supportive on set. I got everyone helping me out everyday. Fans were gathering on the street and the crew would have to get really close together and form a circle around me, so we were really close. I don't know, I guess I haven't worked with that kind of unity before."

Thousands of people have packed movie theaters across the country to see the new Alice in Wonderland in 3-D, and dozens of them will likely leave with headaches.

That's not a criticism of the film, but a fact: Doctors say those with less-than-perfect eyesight can suffer nausea, blurred vision and dizziness from 3-D movies.

"The 3-D technology taps into our depth perception," said Dr. Lawrence Tychsen, ophthalmologist in chief at St. Louis Children's Hospital. "To fully appreciate depth in a 3-D movie, you need equally clear vision in both eyes. Even a small misalignment could contribute to those symptoms of discomfort."

Tychsen said relatively minor conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or a lazy eye — if not treated with glasses or contacts — could trigger headaches and other side effects from 3-D visuals. He estimated that up to 20 percent of the population — kids and adults — could be affected.

"Many people are unaware that anything's wrong until they experience a 3-D movie and have these symptoms," Tychsen said.

The problem comes from so-called vision fatigue, caused when 3-D technology forces the eyes to make constant adjustments to focus on images that are simultaneously near and far away. Humans see in three dimensions, but the exaggerated imagery of 3-D movies can cause a strain in some, according to Jeffrey Anshel, a California optometrist who has researched vision fatigue in computer users.

"Each person will experience it differently," Anshel said, adding that vision fatigue tends to be more pronounced during longer 3-D movies. "I think that a two-hour movie is fine, but going into three or more hours could lead to eye strain."

Reports of vision fatigue popped up in recent months after the release of the 3-D blockbuster Avatar, which has shattered box office records, raking in more than $2.5 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. Several theatergoers complained of motion sickness after watching James Cameron's epic sci-fi adventure, filmed with breakthrough digital 3-D techniques.

Despite causing discomfort in a small number of people, 3-D movies aren't going away anytime soon. Besides Avatar, some of last year's other top-grossing films —Up, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Monsters vs. Aliens — were 3-D, and more than a dozen other 3-D movies are scheduled for release this year and next.

Whether your eyesight is 20/20 or less than perfect, watching a 3-D movie isn't going to cause any vision damage, according to experts like Anshel and Tychsen.

"Getting a headache at a movie isn't harmful, but it is symptomatic of subnormal vision," Tychsen said. "If it happens, that might be a good sign it's time to visit an eye doctor."

MONTREAL—A Canadian man who drew international attention as a prolific producer of illegally copied movies was slapped with a two-and-a-half-month jail sentence Tuesday.

His involvement in piracy was so pervasive that, since his arrest, illegal uploads from Canada are said to have nosedived.

In a landmark decision, Geremi Adam will also be forced to perform 100 hours of community service, and has been given a two-year suspended sentence with a number of conditions.

Prosecutors heralded it as the first time someone has received a jail term in Canada for such a crime.

"I think it's a strong message that if you try to do what Mr. Adam did, you'll face the consequences of that and you'll go to jail," said Crown prosecutor Josee Belanger.

Belanger said the Adam sentence, handed down by Quebec court Judge Suzanne Coupal, appears to be Canada's toughest ever for camcording.

In two previous movie piracy cases, one in Montreal and one in Calgary, the accused were handed fines or probationary sentences. They were also both banned from movie theatres for a period of time.

Among the conditions placed on Adam, he is also banned from going to the movies or carrying recording equipment outside his home or place of work.

The 27-year-old was labelled in 2006 by the FBI to be among the most prolific movie pirates in North America — and one of the best at producing high-quality products.

He pleaded guilty to two counts, under the Copyright Act, for distributing copies of the Hollywood films "Invincible" and "How to Eat Fried Worms" on the Internet under the alias maVen in 2006.

He was nabbed again in 2008 while recording the movie "Street Kings" at another movie theatre, and was charged a third time, this time under the Criminal Code.

The police investigation showed that the movies were then distributed for a fee by an online network.

During his sentencing hearing, the court heard Adam only recorded the movies for notoriety and not really for monetary gain.

Adam's lawyer described him as a self-taught computer whiz who had a troubled childhood and limited education.

"He was interested to show that he was able to do something and it's clear that money was not the object of the infraction," said Richard Brouillard, Adam's lawyer.

But his reputation on the Internet, and among authorities on both sides of the border, made him a key target.

With the nine weeks Adam has served on an unrelated charge, he only has about a week left to serve. He is already in custody pending an attempted break-in charge.

The maximum sentence he could have received for piracy under the Copyright Act was six months in jail and a $25,000 fine.

The Conservatives introduced tougher camcording laws in June 2007 — after most of Adam's infractions took place.

The new law makes recording a movie without permission a crime punishable by two years in jail, and taping a film for future sale or rental now carries a maximum five-year jail term.

Canada had been considered a hotbed of illegal film reproduction, which had been an irritant in relations with the U.S.

Movie industry figures blamed Canada for between 20 and 70 per cent of global camcords and Hollywood huffed that Montreal alone was responsible for up to a quarter of the world figure.

Even the governor of California, former action-movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger, referred to the country's reputation during a visit to Canada.

But in an interview with The Canadian Press last summer, the RCMP said the number of complaints had dropped drastically — to almost nil.

The Motion Picture Association of America didn't return a phone call seeking comment, but one film distributor says there has been noticeable change.

"Since the arrest of Mr. Adam, there's almost no more complaints filed with the RCMP," said Brigitte Melancon, vice-president at Alliance Vivafilm.

"We have to think (new laws) have been a deterrent, it's a good thing."

Mel Gibson’s Viking Movie Rumored to be His Last - E Canada Now

Mel Gibson is working with screenwriter William Monahan, of Edge of Darkness, on a Viking epic. The movie, which currently has no title, will be set in the 9th Century. Gibson is well known for Apocalypto and The Passion of Christ, films made with the native tongue of the time. The new Viking movie may be done in old Nordic.

In a recent LA Times interview Gibson spoke of his fascination with the Vikings, dating it back to his childhood studies of the English language. "It was the first movie I ever thought about making," Gibson said. "I saw it in my mind back when I was teenager. Seriously, it's the first movie I wanted to make. And I think it will be the last film I direct. It's the thing I have been going toward, in a way, since I was young, and I think when it's done I may be finished."

Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the film, though his character has yet to be revealed. DiCaprio's interest in starring in a Viking production was the spark that brought the two actors together. Gibson has no plans at this time to star in the film but that could change.

With all the excitement surrounding the upcoming movie the Runaways, a new generation of fans are getting turned on to the sounds of the 70's all female rock group. Here is a live video, which was shot in Japan, from 1977 of the girls throwing it down live on stage - raw and uncut like rock n roll is meant to be played.

The Runaways two most notable members were the guitarists Joan Jett and Lita Ford, who both would go on to achieve greater popularity as solo artists in the 1980's. Both continue to play live to this day. Lita Ford just came out of retirement after almost 15 years away from the music business and Joan Jett has been playing non stop since her Runaway days.

After the Runaways, singer Cherie Currie tried her hand at a short solo career, but then left the music business.

Drummer Sandy West continued to play music on and off before passing away of lung cancer a few years ago on Oct. 21, 2006. I particularly remember this night very well as I happened to be backstage with Joan Jett in Cleveland when she got the call that Sandy had passed away. Joan put on a slamming set that night in memory of Sandy. If you browse through my pictures, there are a few pictures from that night in my photo gallery.

Bass player Vickie Fox left the music business afterh the Runaways. She held down various jobs in the promotion field and is currently an attorney in the motion picture and television arena, representing actors, writers, directors, authors and producers.

The Runaways are set to be documented in the upcoming movie bearing the name of the band. The movie will star Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Stella Maeve, Scout Taylor-Compton. Kristen plays Joan Jett. Dakota plays Cherie Curie. Scout plays Lita Ford and Stella plays Sandy West.

MPAA boss Glickman says goodbye to Hollywood as he leaves movie-ratings outfit - Washington Examiner

LAS VEGAS — Dan Glickman spent his Hollywood years aiming to improve the ratings system that tells Americans what to expect in a movie — and fighting pirates.

Glickman, the outgoing chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, inherited a tough job from longtime predecessor Jack Valenti to defend Hollywood against counterfeiters distributing illegal copies of movies, first on videotape and DVD, now on the Internet.

For studios, "the protection of their content is the No. 1 issue. Without question, it's piracy," Glickman said in an interview at ShoWest, a convention for theater owners, as he prepares to take a new job April 1 as head of Refugees International.

"But it's broader than just piracy. It's how to protect content in this digital world, particularly on the Internet. The Internet is ubiquitous. Kids can access it. It's all available in their homes, and they feel it's theirs. Our job has been to try to educate people that in fact it's not theirs, unless there's some form or system for paying for it. At the same time, it's our responsibility to provide it in ways that are easily accessible and at reasonable prices."

As Internet speeds increase to the point where huge movie files can be downloaded easily, Hollywood has scrambled to avoid the sort of free sharing of songs that bulldozed the music industry.

As the key studio lobbyist in Washington, D.C., Glickman has been the point man on movie piracy since taking over the MPAA job in 2004 from Valenti, who had overseen the association for 38 years and implemented the ratings system that has been in place since the late 1960s. Valenti died in 2007.

While piracy has been the main financial threat facing studios, Glickman recalled a word of advice from Valenti about the job's most important aspect.

"I remember Jack talked to me about this, and he was right. When I took this job, he said, `the preservation of the ratings system is as key as anything else you'll do. You've got to make sure it's on the level, serves the public, and it's fair and transparent,'" Glickman said.

As during Valenti's tenure, the ratings system continued to draw criticism under Glickman, detractors saying it was too puritanical about sex and overly permissive about violence. The system judges movies by content, assigning them ratings of G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17 to help parents determine what films might be appropriate for children to see.

Kirby Dick's 2006 documentary "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" took the MPAA to task on sex and violence and also said the ratings system was stacked in favor of deep-pocketed studio films and against independent filmmakers whose movies might get slapped with restrictive NC-17 ratings arbitrarily. The film also characterized the ratings system as secretive and lacking consistent standards.

"The criticism that came from that movie, some of it was legitimate, some of it wasn't. We've done some things to try to improve the openness of the system, particularly on how we relate to independent film. We've really opened the doors to that movement and been much more, I think, constructive in the dialogue between them and the MPAA on their ratings and advertising issues," Glickman said.

"I'm really big on the importance of documentary movies, because I think they can have an impact, and I think that movie had some impact on us, quite truthfully."

Glickman, 65, is a former congressman and served as U.S. agriculture secretary under President Bill Clinton. As president of Refugees International, Glickman will oversee the nonprofit group's efforts to provide humanitarian aid for people displaced by crises around the world.

A successor has not yet been chosen at MPAA, but Glickman's new job will be a big change from his Hollywood gig, which took him to such swanky events as the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards.

"I wouldn't say I got addicted to it, but I would say it was a hell of a lot of fun," Glickman said. "I thought to myself, boy, my parents wouldn't believe this. This kid from Kansas — my dad was in the scrap-iron business — and here I'm walking down the red carpet, and I'm commenting on issues like what's the best movie or who's a talented actor or actress."

I got a chance to see the new 3D version of Alice in Wonderland yesterday, and I can understand why the critics were lukewarm about the movie, which is a sort of sequel to the Lewis Carroll tales. The grownup Alice takes a bit of getting used to, and the backstory -- whether she's going to marry a rich twit -- was so thin that it didn't provide any suspense at all. I wish her character was more developed; as it is, she doesn't really come alive until about half-way through the movie. Luckily, there are plenty of interesting, manic characters surrounding her, including Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Add the animated Cheshire Cat, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and a talking bloodhound, and there's plenty to entertain you.

For another take on Alice, here's a look at a new version of the classic, illustrated by artist Camilla Rose Garcia. Alice and the other characters have a spindly, Goth-like feel, which may appeal to the same readers who like the reimagining of the Jane Austen novels.

ShoWest 2010: Movie Theaters Asked to Offer Healthier ... - Coming Soon!

The nation's theater owners were asked today by the head of a major Hollywood studio to have healthier snacks at their concession stands in addition to their traditional offerings of candy, popcorn and soda.

In a speech at ShoWest, the nation's largest convention for the movie theater industry, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton said, "adding healthier options to your existing menu is the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country."

Lynton said a poll of moviegoers commissioned by Sony Pictures revealed:

two-thirds of moviegoers and three-quarters of parents are more likely to buy healthy snacks at theaters if they are offered;
forty-two percent of parents said they would buy concessions more often if healthy options were available;
sixty percent of parents said having healthier snacks in theaters would enhance their overall moviegoing experience;

Lynton said he was not asking theaters to stop selling popcorn, soda and candy. "Audiences love them," he said. "I'm just talking about adding some healthier items to what you already sell."

Lynton also announced that the Alliance for a Healthier Generation has offered to meet with the theater owners "and offer advice on how to change your menus in a way that makes sense for your audiences and your business."

"The private sector, including the theatre industry, has the ability to improve the access families have to healthier foods and beverages," said President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, who co-leads the Alliance for a Healthier Generation with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and American Heart Association President Clyde Yancy. "The Alliance brokered voluntary agreements with the beverage industry that resulted in an 88 percent decrease in beverage calories shipped to America's schools in just a few years. We are eager to work with the movie theater industry to craft similar agreements to provide healthy concession options in movie theaters."

"In order to turn the tide on the obesity epidemic we are going to need to make soup to nuts changes in the number of calories we take in and the calories we actively use. Because kids are eating and foraging at home, school, sporting events and at the movies, changes are needed everywhere," said Dr. Neal Halfon, professor of pediatrics, public health and public policy at UCLA and director of the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities. "We can't expect kids to make healthy choices if they aren't given healthy choices to make. And while this is a nationwide problem, and will require support from companies with a national stature like Sony Pictures and large theater chains, it will also depend on the ingenuity and commitment of local theater operators to make the difference in their communities."

In a videotaped message to the convention, Dr. Mehmet Oz, vice chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University and host of "The Dr. Oz Show," said, "Everyone enjoys popcorn and a soda at the movies, but there are healthier alternatives. Good nutrition doesn't mean eating spinach at every meal. But with so many children and teens going to movies so often these days, I think we've got to be mindful about what they're eating and drinking, and giving them the chance to choose healthier food makes a lot of sense."

Lynton said theater owners should consider taking this step because childhood obesity is an epidemic, it's the responsible thing to do for audiences and society, and it's good for their business because it would help families enjoy theaters even more and, by giving them healthier options, more snacks will be purchased.

Regarding what kinds of snacks might be offered at theaters, Lynton said, "I don't think giant tubs of spinach or broccoli's a good idea. And nobody wants to eat cauliflower while watching Spider-Man, or drink a 40-ounce cup of prune juice."

He said moviegoers suggested to the studio's interviewers the kind of snacks they'd like to see:

fresh fruit, fruit cups, apples with dip;
veggies with dip;
yogurt;
granola bars and trail mix;
baked chips, apples chips and unbuttered, air-popped popcorn.

Lynton said some people sneak healthy snacks into movie theaters, like a granola bar or a box of raisins, which represents an untapped market for concession stands. "People are consuming food differently these days. In fact, many of your theaters are located near Starbucks and Whole Foods and in malls and other places where consumers are now finding more nutritious food and beverage options. Audiences would love both a great theatrical experience and terrific snacks."

Lynton said employees at Sony Pictures are offered a subsidized healthy lunch special and expanded salad bar at the studio commissary. He noted some theaters are moving in the direction of offering healthier foods; some use canola oil instead of coconut oil for their popcorn. He also said he understands that some things "will prove to be logistically or economically impossibleBut even small steps in the right direction can have a big impact."

Dan Smith / Lions Gate Behold Kick-Ass, the film that wowed a small group of hard-core film geeks—and includes Nicolas Cage's funniest role in years. Bryan Curtis attends its world premiere at SXSW.

Last December, a select group of 200 film geeks gathered in a movie theater in Austin, Texas. They were there at the invitation of Harry Knowles, the founder of the Web site Ain't It Cool News. Every year, Knowles celebrates his birthday by screening 24 consecutive hours of movies, an exercise he calls the Butt-Numb-A-Thon. Knowles had plied his Hollywood connections to get big-name, as-yet-unreleased blockbusters like Shutter Island, The Lovely Bones, and, the geek Holy Grail, Avatar. As an additional course, Knowles got a print of a comic-book movie called Kick-Ass.

Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass, was in the theater that night, and worried whether the geeks would adopt his movie. "If they didn't like it, then we were fucked," Vaughn said in an interview this weekend.

Kick-Ass was not a high-priority piece of geek cinema. "The expectation level was kind of a code yellow," Eric Vespe, an Ain't It Cool writer, told me. To make matters worse, one of theater's speakers gave out about a half-hour into the movie. But then something strange happened. Though the audience had been watching movies for 20 straight hours, they began cheering Kick-Ass' brutal action sequences and started clapping along with the music. With its copious references to Batman and Spider-Man—its knowingness to the whole business of comic-book movies—Kick-Ass had won over the hordes. Vespe said it felt like being at a rock concert, adding that Kick-Ass got a bigger ovation than Avatar, Shutter Island, everything other film.

"They got the movie," Vaughn said later. "They got every nuance."

The intervening three months has seen Kick-Ass, which opens nationally on April 16, become a word-of-mouth sensation in certain quarters of the Internet. (A raunchy red-band trailer didn't hurt.) On Friday night, Kick-Ass was back in Austin to open the South By Southwest Film Festival.

• Bryan Curtis: The Best Films of SXSW So what is it? To call it a comic-book spoof, like Mystery Men (1999), would be an injustice. Kick-Ass is, Vaughn said, "a postmodern love letter to superhero films." It borrows teen ennui from Spider-Man, vicious action from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and lines from many comic properties I am not studied enough to recognize. Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson) is a high-school dweeb ala Peter Parker. "Out of my friends, I wasn't even the funny one," he laments. So Dave does something about it. He puts on a forest-green scuba suit. Where the rest of us see the fifth Ninja Turtle, he sees a brave and dashing super hero. He takes to the streets. He is Kick-Ass.

And, well, he's no Dark Knight. In an early scene, Kick-Ass tries to battle some street toughs and gets stabbed in the gut. Describing his directorial thinking, Vaughn said, "Let's at least show the audience of kids that it's not really a good idea to put on a costume and attack a gangster." Kick-Ass is soon out of the hospital and joined by a father and daughter who have also become amateur super heroes: Nicolas Cage (playing a Batman knock-off named Big Daddy) and Chloe Moretz (calling herself Hit-Girl, with a purple wig apparently borrowed from Phyllis Diller).

Kick-Ass has more heroes, like Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), who sounds like sports drink and looks like Johnny Weir. The whole mood is the opposite of the soaring tone of most comic-book movies. Tweaking a line from Spider-Man, Dave says, "With no power comes no responsibility."

Pratt, 25, and Montag, 22, had already tried to quit the NBC reality show twice before they decided to carry on. "Heidi and Spencer are still in the jngle and part of the show," the New York Daily News quoted a representative for them as confirming to Usmagazine.com on June 3.
