| Scary movie was 'Trilogy of Terror" - Alexandria Daily Town Talk Posted: 31 Jan 2010 01:08 AM PST Question: When I was a little girl (in the 1970s) I remember being terrified by my first scary movie. It was about a man who I think had been on a trip and brought his girlfriend this freaky little statue back that came to life and terrorized the girl all over the house until finally she somehow got it into the oven and turn the oven on high. I'm not even sure if I've gotten all these details right but this is how I remember it. Can you tell me the title? Answer: That's a TV movie that everyone seemingly remembers, even if they don't know the title -- it's 1975's "Trilogy of Terror," with Karen Black in three different horror tales, including "Amelia," in which she is attacked by a Zuni fetish doll. Q: In a recent column you described a 1960s-era film about two countries avoiding war by each sending a soldier to a island to fight it out as being "Hell in the Pacific." Wrongo! While that unique anti-war film set during WWII did indeed involve an American and Japanese soldier, they each ended up on the island by happenstance and in fact decided to peacefully co-exist -- until tempers flared at the end -- and both were killed by bombs dropped by one side or the other. Your reader was actually describing "The Challenge," a made for TV anti-war film starring the late, great Darren McGavin. A: On behalf of my dozens of readers, I thank you for the clarification. Q: I remember a movie I only saw once and I have been trying to think of the title. The movie stared Kim Novak and all I can remember is that she was a young girl and in love but she was trying to break up with him in a rainstorm. I hope you can tell me something about this movie. A: Sounds like the 1959 "Middle of the Night," with Novak and Fredric March, Martin Balsam and Lee Grant, based on a play by Paddy Chayevsky. Q: I remember a TV series from about ten years ago about a family with three kids - it was about the problems they had, but it was very down to earth. The only other thing I remember about it was one of the kids - a teenage boy - had a deaf girlfriend. Everyone I mention this to says I'm thinking of "Weeds," but it wasn't that show. Help! | Movie theaters blossom in the downturn - Sacramento Bee Posted: 31 Jan 2010 12:04 AM PST For about two hours, laugh, weep, shiver with fear, feel your adrenaline pumping all for $10, preferably in a comfy chair, maybe with a barrel of buttered popcorn radiating warmth in your lap. Sound like a bargain? In a downturned economy, going to the movies is an enduring entertainment option, even as family budgets lop off vacations, lavish dining and $80 bluejeans. Still one of the cheapest out-of-home entertainment venues, movie theaters are ringing up profits with the proliferation of premium technology, such as IMAX and 3-D, and because movie-going even during the the Great Depression has always been driven by product: movies that people want to see. "Because of the low cost, people don't feel bad about going to the movies. But only if they're interested in them," said Warren Miller, an analyst with Morningstar who tracks Regal Entertainment Group and Cinemark, two of the country's biggest theater chains. "That's why the movies, at least theoretically, are recession-proof," he said. At United Artists Arden Fair 6 recently, Jennifer McLaughlin and two friends perused the offerings on a recent evening. "Compared to other things, it's not that much for entertainment," said McLaughlin, the 31-year-old mother of two. For a family outing, the bill could come to $50, she said. She feeds the family first so they don't have to buy snacks. "That's over the line," she said. She and her friends finally settled on "Youth in Revolt," a comedy. While customers abandoned other retail businesses, forcing them to shrink inventory, lay off workers or file for bankruptcy in 2009, moviegoers plunked down a record $10 billion at the box office, a 10 percent boost nationwide from the year before. Owners of those box offices are emerging superstars in an otherwise moribund retail landscape, drawing foot traffic and sparking business where they open. "For the most part, movies seem to be the escape that people are looking for," said David Corkill, owner of Cinema West, which just opened a 16-screen complex in Folsom. "It's still an inexpensive night out, and people are spending money closer to home." In December, Corkill opened Palladio 16 Cinemas, the region's newest theater complex, in the middle of what is essentially a construction zone for Palladio at Broadstone, an upscale or "lifestyle" shopping center in Folsom that is otherwise uninhabited. That isn't stopping patrons from flocking to don those weird glasses to see "Avatar" in 3-D or watch George Clooney glibly lay off longtime workers. "We can stand alone without a single neighbor," Corkill said, noting that solitary theaters flanking freeways are an ideal setting. Retailers destined for Palladio, halted by the recession, have pushed back opening dates, which could mean a months-long solitary run for the new theaters. "Theaters have been the drawing card for centers," Corkill said. "Once we start seeing some of the other doors open, it's only going to help." Another 16-screen complex is expected to open in September in what was once a Mervyns in Rocklin, one of three new locations this year for SR Entertainment Group in Santa Rosa. The other new locations will be in Arizona, said Daniel Tocchini, president and chief executive officer of the 12-theater chain. The company founded by his father and uncle in 1924 grows steadily, he said, and is primarily interested in the suburbs, including more Sacramento suburban locations. "I guess we're just fortunate. It's a lot cheaper than going to Hawaii, or going to Tahoe," he said of last year's strong performance by theaters. Not only are shopping centers heavily courting movie theaters, some retailers' fortunes have become linked to them, said Garrick Brown, Sacramento research director for commercial real estate brokerage Colliers International. Big-box book-sellers, in particular, are finding they flourish most near movie theaters, which will mean an even stronger trend for that combination in new centers, he said. © Copyright The Sacramento Bee.
