WSJ: Movie Gallery will file bankruptcy next week - MSN Money Posted: 29 Jan 2010 02:04 PM PST The Wall Street Journal reports that Movie Gallery Inc. will file for bankruptcy as early as next week. The Wilsonville-based chain operates a network of approximately 3,000 Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery and Game Crazy chains of video and game rental stores. It will be the second bankruptcy filing in less two years for the chain, which emerged from Chapter 11 in early 2008 but still faces ongoing challenges from changing consumer habits, new movie viewing technology and stiff competition from online services such as Netflix and Redbox. The Wall Street Journal said Movie Gallery would likely seek to reorganize under Chapter 11 again and could file as soon as Tuesday. It cited sources familiar with the situation. Movie Gallery Inc., then based in Dothan, Ala., acquired Hollywood Entertainment in 2005 in a deal worth about $1.2 billion. The deal made it the nation's second-largest movie rental chain, after Blockbuster. Movie Gallery made Hollywood's Wilsonville offices its own headquarters in 2009. Posted: 29 Jan 2010 03:58 PM PST LOS ANGELES (AP) — The offices of award-winning Miramax Films were closing on Friday, but the brand will continue to exist for at least two years. The closures were in line with plans announced in October to slash Miramax's movie production to three per year, down from six to eight. Miramax owner Walt Disney Co. also announced then that Miramax president Daniel Battsek was leaving the company this month. Miramax's operations are being folded into Disney's studio. Disney confirmed it has six Miramax films to be distributed through 2011, including "The Baster" and "The Debt" set for this fall. Disney did not elaborate on its plans beyond that. Miramax, founded in 1979, had made such Oscar-winning films as "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "Good Will Hunting" (1997) and "No Country for Old Men" (2007) and helped launch the career of director Quentin Tarantino. But Disney's own studio has been seeing its profits shrivel and is being reorganized under its new chairman, Rich Ross, 48, who took over in October. Miramax was one of many niche labels shuttered or downsized in Hollywood recently, plagued by high costs and few commercial hits despite their occasional critical success. About 70 jobs at Miramax were eliminated in New York and Los Angeles, and fewer than 10 people from the label will continue to work from Disney's headquarters in Burbank. Miramax was founded by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who came up with the company's name by combining their parents' first names, Miriam and Max. Disney bought Miramax in 1993 for $80 million. The Weinsteins left the company in 2005 — after a highly public dispute with Disney over the Michael Moore documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11." They created The Weinstein Co., which released the war hit "Inglourious Basterds" in August. In a statement, the Weinsteins said they'd like to buy the label back some day. "There isn't much in the world that would make our 83-year-old mother happier," they said. Disney, however, is set to distribute a wide variety of films from other subsidiaries or partners. Those include its Pixar subsidiary, and starting this year, Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG. It is also expected to begin developing movies based on Marvel comic book characters after acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. last month. Copyright 2010 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Robert Downey Jr Enjoys Being 'Big Screen Hero' - Post Chronicle Posted: 29 Jan 2010 07:52 AM PST Robert Downey Jr. has no plans to swap action roles for more serious ones as he gets older. The actor - who can be seen bare-knuckle boxing in 'Sherlock Holmes' and performs many of his own stunts in upcoming superhero movie 'Iron-Man 2' - is enjoying his new reputation as a big screen hero and has no plans to turn his back on the genre. Downey, 44, said: "If the material is still good and you still like to work with the people - why not? 'Sherlock Holmes' was a life-changing experience. That's due to the extensive research we did and because I could actually realise such a big project. I would still play characters like Sherlock in the future. Although, I will probably have another child and an alcohol free vineyard by then." The actor - who is married to producer Susan Levin and has a 16-year-old son Indio with his ex-wife Deborah Falconer - has been enjoying shooting 'Iron-Man 2' but admits it has been hard work getting in and out of his suit. Downey - who plays the metal-clad Marvel Comics character - revealed to website Film Reporter: "Well the suit was a bit lighter, but not light enough for my liking. I had more self-confidence shooting the second film, but I wouldn't say we had fun. We wanted to take more time. We extended the cast and our horizon und made the story more complex and subtle, although it's still easy to follow. We really looked into the storyline thoroughly to make it as good as possible." Downey stars in the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow, who reprises her role as his assistant Pepper Potts, Scarlett Johansson - who plays Natasha Romanoff and her sexy alter-ego, Russian spy Black Widow - and Mickey Rourke, who plays super-villain Whiplash. Samuel L. Jackson also features as super-spy Nick Fury. (c) BANG Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
