Alleged Miley Cyrus Stalker 'Made Set Threat' - Ananova Posted: 26 Aug 2009 10:41 PM PDT A man charged with stalking Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus is said to have told police he planned to return to her film set to "finish things". Mark McLeod was remanded in custody after a judge ruled he was potentially dangerous and there was enough evidence to send the case to trial. According to Miss Cyrus's security guard, McLeod had confided to an investigator that he had planned to "finish things" off. Municipal Court Judge Steven Scheer said he felt McLeod had no chance of getting to the 16-year-old singer because she could afford "the best protection money can buy". But the judge said he feared McLeod might be a threat to others. Miss Cyrus finished work on new Disney film, The Last Song, last week. McLeod was arrested earlier this month after trying to contact the young singer and actress while on a film set on Tybee Island, on Georgia's coast. Police say he tried to breach a security perimeter around the movie set. The 53-year-old had earlier been arrested in June on charges of attempted stalking, disorderly conduct and obstruction. McLeod claimed he had met the star 18 months before and that she had accepted his marriage proposal. He is said to have told police that Miss Cyrus's father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, approved of their relationship. According to reports, the accused claimed that Miss Cyrus had sent him "secret messages" through her TV show. He was arrested again on August 4 after security men reported he had returned to the beachside film set and was acting suspiciously. Miss Cyrus embarks on her first UK tour later this year, beginning at London's O2 Arena in December.

Movie Studio Groundbreaking Today - WWJ Newsradio 950 Posted: 27 Aug 2009 02:44 AM PDT Allen Park (WWJ) -- Lights, Camera, Allen Park. Officials will break ground Thursday afternoon on the 104-acre Unity Studios complex in Allen Park. The facility is scheduled to open in October, and its first project will begin filming in November. Also in October, the Lifton Institute for Media Skills will open on site for its first class of 250 students who will be trained for jobs in the film industry. Allen Park Mayor Gary Burtka says Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony ``will be a celebration of jobs, economic development and a new industry putting down roots in Michigan.'' Unity Studios is majority owned by a group of investors from Los Angeles and Michigan, including President Jimmy Lifton, a veteran Hollywood film executive. Roughly 3,000 skilled and nonskilled positions will be union-represented, while there will also be an additional 80-plus operation and management jobs. Allen Park residents and laid-off union workers from the region will get first crack at the jobs. Movie season enters late-summer doldrums - Detroit News Posted: 27 Aug 2009 12:50 AM PDT Tom LongThis weekend signals the drop-off-a-cliff end of the summer movie season, as well as perhaps the beginning of the worst three-week period in the year-round movie schedule. The question is: Why? Why must the end of August and beginning of September be the dark hole of movie releases year after year? It's as if some God of Hollywood declared decades ago that the end of summer would be treated as a dead zone, and no one since has bothered to question the edict. The entries around this time are fairly predictable. Obviously hoping to fulfill what teen bloodlust remains unsated before the advent of school and football, Hollywood always offers up plenty of what high school and college students apparently enjoy watching most -- high school and college students being killed. Advertisement This year's entries are the bloody catastrophe celebration "The Final Destination" and the horror sequel/remake "Halloween II," and they will likely fill the need. If not, "Jennifer's Body" and "Sorority Row" will be along in a couple weeks. Usually, there's also some sort of movie about going to college and drinking a lot that comes out around now, but Hollywood seems to have dropped that ball this year. Maybe someone decided kids like killing more than drinking. Maybe this society is really messed up. Either way, you can usually find at least one sci-fi holdover considered too weak for summer ("Gamer") and a film with a big star that a studio apparently wants to bury. You see Nicolas Cage a lot at this time of year, but Sandra Bullock and "All About Steve" seem to fill that niche in 2009. The point being, this period -- end of summer, let school get rolling before Oscar possibilities trot out in October -- has been declared dead for no good reason. Also declared dead for decades was January. Which is why "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "Taken" were somewhat dumped there at the beginning of this year. But "Blart" went on to earn $146 million; "Taken" made $145 million. Apparently someone forgot to tell the movie audience it was a dead season. This lull season also probably has something to do with studios revving up their big guns for the Toronto International Film Festival in mid-September -- all those parties to plan and interviews to schedule. But again, the moviegoing audience doesn't care. Give them a decent movie and they'll probably go. The best evidence for this is the month of August itself, which not that long ago was considered a 31-day black hole. But over the past decade, it's become an extension of the summer season that generally stays lively until the end of the month. When Hollywood puts on the brakes. Well, take off the brakes. Spread the wealth. Take some of that good October stuff and open it early. Let a couple of Oscar contenders begin a slow rollout. Heck, even give us another "Blart." Young people will always enjoy watching young people die in horrible ways at the end of summer. And that's fine. But how about something for the rest of us? tlong@detnews.com (313) 222-8879 This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
