Sadat's daughter takes on filmmakers - The London Free Press Posted: 09 Aug 2009 10:54 PM PDT CAIRO -- The daughter of Egypt's former president Anwar Sadat has filed a complaint against the makers of I Love You Man, a 2009 Dreamworks film, for naming a dog after her father, her lawyer said Saturday. Egypt's prosecutor will look into the complaint, but it is unclear what sort of action Egyptian courts could take against the Hollywood movie company. In the movie, actor Jason Segel's character has a dog named Anwar Sadat. The name of the dog also appears in the credits as Anwar Sadat, playing himself, the dog. Ratatouille: a must see foodie movie - San Francisco Examiner Posted: 10 Aug 2009 02:00 AM PDT There are not many words that can be found to describe the essence of this movie, aside from the motto: "Anyone can cook." It is a fabulous illustration of what it means to not only be a chef, but to love food! Ratatouille is an inspired journey unlike any foodie movie yet made. Waiting, which came out a few years before, makes a farce of service... while hilarious and accurate when it comes to the drama of working in restaurants, it never approaches the passionate dynamic most cooks have when approaching food, and the result is a sad commentary on the state of employment available from the server perspective. The cooks, however, have a different attitude which the servers of the world will probably never appreciate, and Ratatouille reflects this. While Collette (the cheesy love interest, played by the very caliente Janeane Garofalo) remarks blandly that cooks are the "pirates" of society (one of this author's favorite monikers) she also clearly illustrates heirarchy and makes a passionate statement delineating her place in "a man's world." Yes, there is a feminist element, which is completely corrupted by the cheesy romantic sub-plot. But, as Linguini's subservient nature makes clear, an element of intuition and "je ne sais quoi" makes the movie relevant and passionate at the same time, validating the architecture of food: as Escoffier would say. Unfortunately, we don't see any actual recipes at work, but can only expect so much from the typical melodrama. It is a surprising denouement that the critic who brings the restaurant down (?) is a "Food Lover." Comfort food rules his world, and "Ratatouille" slays the ultimate fascist of food. Of course, it's all prepared by rats, making the scene iconic, as the whole staff has walked out upon discovering Linguini's secret, that it is a mouse directing him which creates his success... sorry to plant a spoiler. All the while we are reminded of "Secret of Nihm" and we wait for "Javar" to arise from the script of "Alladin". Justice is pursued, and we can not forget that Augustus, the muse, is not much different from Bernard Loiseau in his pursuit of success, all the while fulfilling romantic expectations and the stereotypes associated with Celebrity Chefs. While we can't expect much more from Disney, they've somehow managed to give us a surprisingly accurate depiction of life in the kitchen.

Steven Spielberg To Produce Halo Movie? - Kotaku.com Posted: 09 Aug 2009 11:15 PM PDT
IESB say Spielberg has been "blown away" by Stuart Beattie's screenplay, which as we know deals with a kid called John. Oh, and some aliens as well, along with a little shooting. IESB also point out that having lost Transformers, Dreamworks (having recently split from their distribution deal with Paramount) will be looking to gain a replacement "tentpole" action series, and Halo - which has been abandoned by Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp - fits the bill perfectly. Apparently CAA, who list Spielberg as a client, have the director in "active negotiations" to produce the movie. So please, make note of this. He's rumoured to be in talks to produce the movie, not direct it. Sounds crazy, but then, five years ago how many of you would have picked that Spielberg would produce a Transformers movie? Meet Koko the new canine movie star - New Kerala Posted: 10 Aug 2009 01:17 AM PDT Melbourne, Aug 10 : Australia's newest and cutest movie star Koko has been revealed to have dreamy brown eyes, a mischievous grin, screen charisma in spades, and four legs. The dog was discovered as producer Nelson Woss auditioned a number of good-looking hounds to fill the lead role in ''Red Dog'', a film adaptation of Louis de Bernieres'' book. And when he saw the red kelpie, he knew he had his star. "Some people are stars," the Courier Mail quoted him as saying. "You don''t know what it is about them, but they change the temperature of the room," he said. De Bernieres, a British author, had written ''Red Dog'' after seeing a statue erected in the hound''s honour in Dampier, Western Australia. The story goes that the real animal would either travel by train or hitchhike from town to town. "It''s amazing how many people were affected over such a vast area by this little dog," Woss said. "He would intersect people''s lives and change them. He became a mascot for the whole community," he stated. Raised by a family of breeders, Koko is now working with veteran animal trainer Luke Hura at a secret location about an hour from Melbourne. By the time filming starts in the first half of next year, he will have been rehearsing for more than 12 months, which is why Woss wants to keep his exact whereabouts under wraps. "Koko''s a great dog," Hura said. But he added that like any big movie star, "he can be a little demanding at times". Joel Pearlman will be managing director of the film, which he said would be very Australian. "There have been other films about dogs before but I think Red Dog is completely original," he said. "He is his own character. "We''re certainly excited about the potential this project has because the characters are so warm. "We''re hoping he''s not going to hog the limelight too much," Pearlman added. Kriv Stenders will be directing the movie. --- ANI This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
