| Madonna wants Cate for movie - Age Posted: 01 Sep 2009 06:30 PM PDT The Age: national, world, business, entertainment, sport and technology news from Melbourne's leading newspaper. Skip directly to: Search Box, Section Navigation, Content. Text Version. Madonna wants Cate Blanchett to star in her new musical movie. The 4 Minutes singer is set to direct and produce Wallis - about the life of American socialite Wallis Simpson, who Britain's King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry. She wants the Notes On A Scandal actress to take on the lead role opposite Doctor Who actor David Tennant after opting against casting Keira Knightley. A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place. "The first scene of the film is an old woman in her 90s living on her own in a Parisian flat. She starts to tell her life story to her housekeeper. It turns out the old woman is Wallis Simpson. "There will be a song for each decade of her life." Madonna – whose last acting role in a movie was in 2002 flop Swept Away – had been planning to start work on the film last year, but it was put on hold while she finalised her divorce from Guy Ritchie. A source said at the time: "Madonna sees Wallis Simpson as her next big film project. She is fascinated by this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her tangled love life. "It was all systems go until the divorce, when everything was put on the back-burner." Edward was forbidden from marrying Wallis because she was divorced. In 1936, he gave up the throne so he could be with her. The pair married and moved to France, where they lived out their lives as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Edward's brother, George VI, replaced him as king. BANG! | Young Ann Arbor crew hopes low-budget movie jump starts their careers - Detroit Free Press Posted: 02 Sep 2009 12:07 AM PDT Christopher Gorham, the nerdy accountant Henry on ABC's "Ugly Betty," is celebrating his birthday on a sidewalk in Ann Arbor. A temporary buffet is set up outside the Blind Pig, where shooting for a movie is taking place in the 8 Ball Saloon in the basement. Sitting at a nearby table is a recent arrival to the set, Chris Parnell of "Saturday Night Live" fame. But this isn't a big-budget production. It's a lean, mean humor machine. "Trivial Pursuits," a comedy about competitive trivia games at bars, set at the University of Michigan, is being filmed in and around the campus. The film focuses on a group of frustrated academics who find solace and a challenge in the world of trivia games when they enter a tournament. Production is winding down, with filming planned at Michigan Stadium before the football season opener Saturday and during the first week of classes next week. The project has a long way to go before it reaches audiences, but the cast is promising and the premise has an offbeat charm that won over the cast and crew. "When it started, I didn't know what it was going to be, how it was going to turn out," says Gorham, 35. "Seeing a lot of the dailies we've shot so far, it's really good." The movie is a love letter of sorts to Ann Arbor, the hometown of writer-director Christopher Farah and producer Mike Farah, brothers who say they're happy to be back. Mike Farah, 30, studied finance at Indiana University and was convinced after an internship that a conventional career wasn't for him. He packed up a truck and moved to Los Angeles about eight years ago, where he's found a niche working for the comedy Web site FunnyorDie.com. Christopher Farah, 33, a U-M alumnus, was a journalist before he made the switch to movies. He drew on his student days in Michigan and his bar trivia experiences in New York for "Trivial Pursuits." The Farah brothers and producer Anna Wenger worked closely with the university to use campus locations in the film. They also hired several recent graduates for their crew.
