Comentale and University of Louisville professor Aaron Jaffe . In the review, titled "Dissertations on His Dudeness," Dwight Garner writes, "The book is, like The Dude himself, a little rough around the edges. But it's worth an end-of-the-year holiday pop-in. Movie Capsule Reviews - Edmonton Journal Posted: 31 Dec 2009 12:19 AM PST The Robert Zemeckis motion-capture animation version of the Charles Dickens classic is mostly about technology, and it's amazing. Characters fly through space, cameras swoop and turn, ghosts glow with menace. There's a story here, but it is almost buried, along with Jim Carrey's several performances -- as Scrooge and the ghosts -- that seem like works of special effects rather than acting. Did You Hear About The Morgans? 1/2 Director: Marc Lawrence Starring: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott Sarah Jessica Parker plays a successful Manhattan real-estate agent who is recently separated from her husband (Hugh Grant), a lawyer who is attempting to make up for being unfaithful. When they witness a murder, they are forced into the witness protection program in rural Wyoming. This, in turn, sets the stage for another hour or so of situational comedy along the lines of: City folk in the country! Zero laughs ensue. The Hurt Locker - - - - Director: Kathryn Bigelow Starring: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Evangeline Lilly A lean and muscular film that essentially embeds us in Iraq alongside an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), The Hurt Locker does not judge its participants nor its raison d'etre. This movie from Kathryn Bigelow ( Point Break) transcends the political slop surrounding Iraq and cuts straight to the bone, letting us touch the hard, bloody reality of war without casualties of cliche. THE IM AGIN ARIUM OF DO CTOR PARNASSUS - - Director: Terry Gilliam Starring: Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Christopher Plummer Terry Gilliam's new fantasy -- best known as Heath Ledger's final movie; he died during the filming -- is a clattering heap of whimsy. A circus wagon is travelling through the country transporting a magic mirror through which the public can enter its own imagination; meanwhile the devil (Tom Waits) is waiting to inherit the owner's teenage daughter. It's a mess. Invict us - - - - Director: Clint Eastwood Starring: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon Clint Eastwood directs Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in this fact-based drama about South Africa's fairy tale ride at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Seeing an opportunity to unite his country through athletics, Mandela approached the team captain -- played here by Matt Damon -- to win one for the nation. Because the film revolves around forgiveness, the movie skirts sport movie cliche and finds real soul. IT'S COMPLI CATED - - 1/2 Director: Nancy Meyers Starring: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin Nancy Meyers writes and directs this movie about a divorced couple who get back together for a secret affair. The movie finds some nice moments, thanks to the courage of the two leads, Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, but the script is a little too pat and the dialogue a little too contrived to score comedy gold. In the end, It's Complicated proves too simple. nine - - - Director: Rob Marshall Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren The film version of the stage musical (based on Fellini's 8 1/ 2) is a tuneless story about a film director (Daniel Day-Lewis) who can't think of a script for his new movie and is haunted by the many women (including Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and others) who made him what he is. It's a stylish but somewhat dispirited exercise that marks no advance on the original movie itself. Old Dogs - 1/2 Director: Walt Becker Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
