"Nutcracker" Reimagined As Action Movie - Post Chronicle Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:26 AM PST New Line has picked up a pitch from Darren Lemke, the writer behind the studio's Bryan Singer-directed project "Jack the Giant Killer," that reimagines the classic tale of "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" as an action-adventure movie. "Nutcracker" is best known as the Christmas ballet with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, but the story was written by E.T.A. Hoffmann decades before the ballet's debut in 1892. The story centers on a 12-year-old girl, her brother and sister, who receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which is a Nutcracker doll. That night, the girl embarks on an adventure that includes a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice. The story, with its themes of ugliness and beauty, has been adapted into various forms of animation, and the ballet version has found itself on screens many times. The update, produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment, will be written in a family-adventure tone similar to "The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Lemke has worked often with folk and fairy tales; in addition to writing "Giant," he worked on DreamWorks Animation's fairy tale-skewing "Shrek Forever After." He also worked with Temple Hill on an update of "The Wizard of Oz." "I like the classic stories, but only if you can find a way to embrace them, without betraying them, and tell the tale with a forward thrust, making them feel modern," he said. Lemke also worked on "The Mechanic," in production, and "Gemini Man," set up at Disney. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
Gibson planning movie at Mexican prison, official says - News-Leader.com Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:48 AM PST A Mexican governor says Mel Gibson will make a movie at a prison in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz next year. Veracruz Gov. Fidel Herrera says part of the Ignacio Allende prison will be emptied in January "because a grand production will be filmed there with our friend, the actor and producer Mel Gibson." Gibson visited the prison in April 2008. Herrera gave no details Sunday on the film. Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, could not be reached for comment. Gibson filmed his 2006 Mayan-language movie "Apocalypto" in Veracruz. The actor-director donated $1 million to replace storm-damaged homes in Veracruz and in neighboring Chiapas state earlier this year. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. New movie production begins shooting locally - The Daily Advertiser Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:40 AM PST Fresh off the filming of Disney's Secretariat, Lafayette has rolled out the red carpet for another movie production. The independent film Fight or Flight began filming in Lafayette on Tuesday. A co-production of Los Angeles-based Remember Dreaming, Freefall Films and MKM, the film is the first of several producers have planned for the area. Flight or Flight takes place when a terrorist plot in a federal building releases a secret government virus that triggers a fight or flight reaction in many of the building's employees. Federal officials quarantine the building and plan to blow it up while a small group of uninfected fight to get out. "It's kind of Die Hard meets 28 Days Later," said Stan Spry, president of Remember Dreaming. Spry said co-producer Justin Jones recommended the area as a potential location for the film, and the city proved "perfect." Jones had worked in Lafayette previously on projects for Bullet Films and Active Entertainment. "Coming from California, the people here are very laid back and very helpful," Spry said. "We have enjoyed our time here, and we wanted to continue to shoot as many projects as we can." Lafayette has emerged as a major player in the state's movie industry since the establishment of the Lafayette Entertainment Initiative in 2007. Active Entertainment has filmed six movies in the Acadiana region, and the recent filming of Secretariat showed that the city can handle a major motion picture as well, said LEI assistant liaison John Peterson. "The goal is ultimately to have a self-sustaining entertainment industry here," Peterson said, noting effects company Pixel Magic's recent decision to open an office in Lafayette. "When we can start pointing to constant production activity," more high-tech companies will follow, he said. Spry said film-friendly Louisiana tax incentives also played a part in producers' decision to film in Lafayette. The state provides a 25 percent tax credit on all productions larger than $300,000, and an additional 10 percent tax credit for productions employing Louisiana residents. Spry said Fight or Flight will be shot in and around the city over the next three weeks. The film is expected to be released in Spring 2010. Spry said Remember Dreaming plans to return to Lafayette in February for its next film, Two Wolves. Parts of that film will also be shot in Baton Rouge, he said.
