| Movie Review: 'Brothers' - Los Angeles Independent Posted: 03 Dec 2009 12:52 AM PST With more American troops preparing to enter Afghanistan and images of the Fort Hood massacre still fresh in the memory, the prospects for another Hollywood war film set in modern times might seem grim at first. But any skeptical reception would be a shame for "Brothers," a riveting and finely-acted family drama played out against the psychological brutality of the conflict and the effects it can have on those left behind. A remake of an acclaimed 2004 Danish film, it stars Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal as thirtysomething siblings whose lives have gone in completely different directions. Maguire's Capt. Sam Cahill, a decorated Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, is married to his high school sweetheart Grace (Natalie Portman) and the father of two girls, the adorably cute Maggie (Taylor Geare) and the willful Isabelle (Bailee Madison). On the other hand, Tommy Cahill (Gyllenhaal) is the prodigal son, a drifter and ex-con who seems to despise the authority and traditional family values espoused by his Vietnam vet father Hank (Sam Shepherd). When early on the Cahill family sits down for Sam's farewell meal, you can cut the atmosphere with a knife as a slow, restrained opening threatens to take a more emotional turn. As it happens, that is just a warm-up; soon the action switches to the remote, inhospitable terrain of Afghanistan's Pamir Mountains, where Sam, believed dead after his Blackhawk helicopter is shot down, and one other survivor are captured and tortured by Taliban fighters. In reality, both the American suburban landscapes, including the fictional Marine base of Fort Mahlus and rugged Afghan terrain, were shot on location in Las Vegas and two cities in New Mexico. However, both the conflict here and over there are skillfully handled by writer David Benioff ("Troy," "The Kite Runner") and director Jim Sheridan ("In America," "Get Rich or Die Tryin'") as they capture the brothers' divergent personas. Now stripped of his moral code, Sam is forced to do whatever it takes to survive and get back home to his family, while Tommy begins to man up and help Grace and the girls through the traumatic loss. Of course, the discovery that Sam is alive brings shock and unfettered joy, but the downer is that his traumatic captivity could tear the family apart. Reminiscent of introspective Vietnam War dramas such as "Coming Home" and "The Deer Hunter," the theme — which may be anathema to conservative tastes — is that war is hell on two fronts: the battlefield where soldiers give their lives and the families still at home. Sam, played with methodical intensity by Maguire, starts out as the model soldier — unquestioning and straight as an arrow, until he finds himself in a predicament that almost robs him of his very humanity. Back in the bosom of his family, he wrestles with his conscience and the values that had shaped his life. While blowing off his matinee idol persona in a less dramatic role, Gyllenhaal is no less effective as the malcontent who shows latent maturity and comes to respect his brother's courage. Meanwhile, Portman, with blonde highlights and added worry lines, shows an adult sense of true grit in keeping it all together for the sake of her girls. However, she does weaken momentarily when sharing a joint and a bottle of wine with Tommy one night he asks her why she never liked him in high school. "Because you were always drunk, always high and just wanted to start fights," she replies before leaning in for a brief kiss. But as that old Hollywood saying goes, never work with children and animals. Nine-year-old Bailee Madison, who is shaping up to be the next Dakota Fanning, steals the film's most memorable scene when she cruelly spoils a family homecoming birthday meal for her sister. If there is one gripe (and to really annoy conservative sentiment) it's that the Taliban — and therefore all Afghans — are demonized as villains even despite one of the fighters impertinently asking Cahill: "Why are you here? This is not your land." That question may be one that the American people will be wrestling with for man years to come. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |

| True stories offer cable's Lifetime Movie Network a slate of hit ... - New York Daily News Posted: 03 Dec 2009 01:50 AM PST Thursday, December 3rd 2009, 4:00 AM Lifetime Movie Network, a sister of the female-driven Lifetime, has quickly become one of the fast-growing channels in cable TV. It's done so, in part, by being the go-to place for ripped-from-the-headlines movies, such as "Amish Grace," a new film the network is producing based on the true story of the 2006 schoolhouse shooting in the Amish community of Nickel Mines, Pa. That film follows the path set by LMN's "Natalee Holloway" and many other originals that have delved into true-crime stories to bring women to the set. "Women like true stories," Tanya Lopez, senior vice president of original movies at Lifetime, told the Daily News. "Women like things that are authentic and that they can learn from. We don't just do a 'ripped from the headlines' movie. We tell the story behind the story, from a female point of view." "Amish Grace," starring Kimberly Williams-Paisley, is based on the book "Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy," written in the aftermath of the shooting. Williams-Paisley plays Ida Graber, the mother of a young girl killed in the tragic event, who must overcome her grief in order to forgive the shooter and his widow, along with the rest of the community. "We thought this was an important story for Lifetime to share because it showed these people as being human, as having depth, and because, even though they questioned why this terrible thing happened, they came out the other side to a place where we all wish we could get to," said Lopez. "It's inspirational and aspirational." The first 10 months of 2009 were LMN's most-watched 10 months of any year since its launch in 1998. It reaches more than 72 million homes. Its 2009 slate included 16 new movies, including "Natalee Holloway," which became the highest-rated original movie in the network's history. "As broadcast networks got out of the made-for-TV movie business and the Showtimes and HBOs focused on the political domain, it left a chunk of real estate that had always been successful, which was movies targeted specifically at a female audience," said Katz Media Group analyst Bill Carroll. "What the Lifetime Movie Network is doing is providing, both in production and their library, the kinds of films that their audience wants to see and that they cannot see anywhere else," said Carroll. Even a series like "Law & Order," which often uses real-life incidents for story inspiration, doesn't cover the same scope that a Lifetime Movie Network original might. "'Law & Order' is a show about following the facts," Lopez said. "We're reporting the emotion and the drama behind the characters. The facts are important to us and we do use them as a blueprint, but what we care about is the dramatic emotional story." This content has passed through fivefilters.org.
