Spring movie preview: Nine movies to see this season - MLive.com Posted: 28 Feb 2010 02:15 AM PST By John Serba | The Grand Rapids PressFebruary 28, 2010, 5:16AM
The Kraken also exists as a movie metaphor; every week, the Hollywood machine unleashes a beast intended to wreak havoc at the cineplex. And just as the new CGI Kraken faces the intense scrutiny of our anticipation, each new film might be a sight to behold -- or just a big, fat disappointment. Thus, the April-March release corridor: Every week for the next two months, a movie with big expectations will stomp into theaters trying to impress us. Here are nine to watch in the next two months (release dates are subject to change):"Alice in Wonderland" (PG) In what seems like a perfect creative match, Tim Burton tackles author Lewis Carroll's triptastic psychedelic classic. Johnny Depp looks more like Bozo the Clown than the Mad Hatter, but he's surrounded by a stellar cast, including Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and (hooray!) Crispin Glover. Young Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowska plays Alice. Will show in 3-D on IMAX and regular-size screens. "Green Zone" (R) The only enduring, truly invigorating action films in recent years have been "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Bourne Supremacy." Thus, the reunion of director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon for this film is (potentially) awesome. It's about an Army officer who breaks the rules in search of WMDs in an unstable region -- and if it features a sequence as thrillingly virtuosic as the Tangier chase/fight from "Ultimatum," I'll be ecstatic. "The Runaways" (R) Met with a meh at Sundance, but this much-discussed bio about the 1970s rockin' teen-girl group is still generating buzz. Kristen Stewart plays Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning is Cherie Curie. Consider my curiosity piqued. "How to Train Your Dragon" (PG) Dreamworks burned us a little last year with the blah "Monsters vs. Aliens," but we still have reason to be excited about this 3-D animated story about Viking Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third (voice of Jay Baruchel), who must corral a dragon before he can be deemed a man. It's directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who proved their worthiness with the underrated "Lilo and Stitch." (It's also scheduled for an IMAX 3-D run.) "Clash of the Titans" (not yet rated) I still can't believe they show the Kraken in the trailer. But, the tug of nostalgia may bring those of us who saw the 1981 film to theaters for this remake, starring Sam Worthington ("Avatar") as the monster-battling mortal son of Greek god Zeus (Liam Neeson). The spectacle of big CGI beasts, explosive FX and a 3-D presentation will lure in audiences too young to remember the original's cheesy-but-endearing stop-motion monsters, courtesy of legendary animator Ray Harryhausen. "Date Night" (PG-13) The two funniest people on TV, Steve Carell and Tina Fey, play a blase NYC couple forced into a dangerous chase when they're mistaken for someone else. Fans of "The Office" and "30 Rock" probably are on board already, whether or not they know the huge supporting cast includes Kristen Wiig, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mila Kunis and Mark Ruffalo. But with that PG-13 rating, I'm worried this might be too middle-of-the-road (read: too safe). "Kick-Ass" (R) The Internet has been atwitter about this comedy in which a teen decides to become a superhero despite having bubkus for powers. Based on a comic book by Mark Millar ("Wanted"), this film gained a lot of momentum when Comic-Con '09 attendees went bonkers over footage. It promises to be edgy, violent and funny, and could make newcomer Aaron Johnson a star. Nicolas Cage has a supporting role; Matthew Vaughn ("Layer Cake") directs. "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" (not yet rated) You've probably already deduced the irony inherent in Oliver Stone's resurrection of a past glory: cash-in! Maybe that's true, but Stone has never failed to be provocative. Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is released from prison and is the last resort for a young trader (Shia LaBeouf), who needs help warning others of an impending economic catastrophe. Josh Brolin and current Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan ("An Education") also star. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (not yet rated) One name, and you'll be on board: Jackie Earle Haley. The character actor, charismatic and creepy in "Little Children" and "Watchmen," seems like the absolute perfect choice to play the disfigured freakazoid Freddy Krueger, who returns to haunt the dreams of teens. Finally, a horror remake (possibly) worth our attention. Friday "Brooklyn's Finest" (R) -- Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") directs this drama about three Brooklyn cops (Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle) at career crossroads. March 12 "Remember Me" (PG-13) -- "Twilight" hunk Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin play damaged souls in this dramatic romance. "She's Out of My League" (R) -- Potentially raunchy comedy stars Jay Baruchel (TV's "Undeclared") as an insecure schmoe dating his dream girl. "Our Family Wedding" (PG-13) -- Wedding comedy stars Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia as fathers of feuding families. Also with America Ferrara. March 19 "The Bounty Hunter" (PG-13) -- Gerard Butler plays a man with the titular profession in this action-comedy. The twist? His next target is his ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston). "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" (PG) -- The hit Web comic and book series, about a seventh grader's misadventures, is adapted for the big screen starring Zachary Gordon. "Repo Men" (R) -- Not to be confused with cult classic "Repo Man," this sci-fi tale stars Jude Law as a man who repossesses organs from transplantees who don't make their payments. Also with Forest Whitaker. March 26 "Hot Tub Time Machine" (R) -- Ridiculous throwback comedy about four bored dudes who warp back to their 1980s glory via a magic hot tub. With John Cusack, Rob Corddry. March 31 "The Last Song" (PG) -- Miley Cyrus drops the Hannah Montana persona to star in a weepie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Liam Hemsworth is her love interest, Greg Kinnear plays her dad. April 2 "Furry Vengeance" (PG) -- Kiddie comedy stars Brendan Fraser as a real-estate developer thwarted from building by fuzzy woodland creatures. "Why Did I Get Married Too" (PG-13) -- Filmmaker Tyler Perry's sequel to his story about four couples analyzing their marriages while on a group vacation. With Janet Jackson, Michael Jai White. April 9 "Letters to God" (PG) -- Faith-based drama about a cancer-stricken boy inspiring his friends and relatives by writing to God. April 16 "Death at a Funeral" (not yet rated) -- Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence star in this Hollywood remake of Frank Oz's British comedy about a family squabbling after its patriarch passes away. "MacGruber" (R) -- The "Saturday Night Live" spoof of "MacGyver" makes the leap to the big screen; Will Forte and Kristen Wiig will face off against Val Kilmer, playing the evil Dieter Von Cunth. April 22 "Oceans" (not yet rated) -- On Earth Day 2009, Disney released the well-received documentary "Earth"; this year, the studio follows it with an examination of life underwater. April 23 "The Back-up Plan" (not yet rated) -- Jennifer Lopez headlines this high-concept comedy, playing a single woman who, the day she is artificially impregnated, meets the man of her dreams. "The Losers" (not yet rated) -- Another under-the-radar comic-book adaptation, starring Zoe Saldana and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as CIA agents searching for those who betrayed them. Local-release date TBA: "The Ghost Writer" (PG-13) -- Roman Polanski directs this drama about a man uncovering dangerous secrets while assisting in writing a former British Prime Minister's memoirs. "Greenberg" (R) -- Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale") directs this sure-to-be uncomfortably funny drama starring Ben Stiller as a jobless, wayward New Yorker who moves to Los Angeles. "Hubble 3-D" (G) -- IMAX documentary shares the history, and interstellar images captured by, the space telescope. "I Love You Phillip Morris" (R) -- The writers of "Bad Santa" script and direct this way-offbeat comedy about a con artist (Jim Carrey) trying to win the love of his former prison mate (Ewan McGregor). Inman: 'One in a Million' movie featured harmonica players - Alexandria Daily Town Talk Posted: 28 Feb 2010 12:57 AM PST Question: I saw a very old movie on TV several years ago with a harmonica-playing scene that was incredible. This harmonica ensemble played a very long number with harmonicas of all sizes. I wanted the number to go on even longer because it was so humorous and entertaining. The movie itself was about an Olympic skater. Can you tell me the name of the movie? Answer: The movie is "One in a Million" from 1936, which introduced skater Sonia Henie to American audiences. It was the first in a series of films she made for 20th Century Fox, including "Thin Ice," "Happy Landing," "Sun Valley Serenade" and "Ouch! My Ankle!" (just kidding about that one). Oh -- and the harmonica-playing fellows were Borrah Minnevitch and His Harmonica Rascals. No, really. Q: Back in 1963 I saw this episode of "The Outer Limits" that had to do with a queen bee that became human. I saw it again recently and I just didn't remember how cheesy it was. However, I did remember how "hot" the queen bee was. I think the actress who played her was named Joanna Franks. My question is did she work any after that cheesy disaster? I don't remember seeing her in anything else, and believe me, I would remember. A: This may also account for your unusual love of pollen. Anyway, the episode was called "ZZZZZZZ" and the actress who played Regina the QB was Joanna Frank. In real life she is the sister of Steven Bochco, who gave us "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue," among other shows, and her other TV and movie roles are sparse. She appeared in the films "Say Anything" and "Always." She is married to Alan Rachins, who played stuffy attorney Douglas Brackman on "L.A. Law," and she played his wife Sheila on several episodes. Q: Years ago I watched a movie and could never find out the name. It's about a guy who goes to a drive-in and stands in front of the screen and starts shooting people in their cars. What was the title? A: That's the 1968 cult classic "Targets," with Tim O'Kelly as the psycho and Boris Karloff as an elderly horror movie actor making a personal appearance at the theatre. It was director Peter Bogdonavich's first film. Q: A few years back I saw a movie but I don't remember the title. It started out with a boy being dropped off by a parent at a bus stop. He was told to stay there and they would be back. They never came back. So a store owner gave him a place to live and he grow up in this town, but he never talked. One day a crime was committed and he was called to testify. And lo and behold he amazed the whole court room when he spoke. Can you help? A: That's the 1997 TV movie "What the Deaf Man Heard," with Matthew Modine in the title role. The cast also includes Claire Bloom, James Earl Jones and Bernadette Peters.
